Questions about a C.L. Bailey Addison 8' Pool Table

Chris
Hey all, Chris here, I just had some questions about C.L. Bailey Addison 8'x4' table and this seemed like the place to get some answers. I have recently been playing a lot of pool. Between the pool halls in Tallahassee and my Dads old 72 Brunswick back home in Jacksonville, I have improved my novice skills significantly. I will include pictures of the table in question as attachments to this post.

Come August I will be moving into a new apartment and I have been looking into purchasing an 8' Bailey from a good friend of mine. Like many of us they are having a tough time with the economy and are looking to get rid of of the table along with the assorted racks, sticks, bridge, calk, etc (Not the best quality accessories, looks like value pack quality). They have offered a flat fee of $1000 for me and my roommate to split. They also will include the price of moving the table within that price (If we can find a reasonable price). The move will be from Jacksonville FL. to Tallahassee FL, nearly a 3 hour drive. I have not currently consulted with any professionals to get an estimate of assembly/disassembly price out of fear that it will exceed $500. If anyone has any information on moving 8' tables it would be much appreciated.

I have never purchased a table before and I'm not completely positive if this deal would be worth it or not. I am not familiar with Bailey tables, but I have given this one a thorough test run. I tested the roll on the table, to test its 1 inch slate and everything seemed to run straight and true. The felt was obviously low grade and I am really looking to get a pro grade cloth put on it during assembly. The bumpers seemed quite responsive and ran faster than I anticipated with the ragged felt, perhaps I'm just not use to playing on an 8 footer? Never the less the bumpers seemed to have more response than my Dads 9'. I have my own cue and some older cues from my Dad that will take the place of the cheap cues, I will need to buy nice felt and some new chalk and such so I will need to add that into my budget. With those improvements I see a possibility for a quality recreational table that will go nicely in my 14'x18' room. Hopefully not exceeding say $1250..... Hopefully, sadly I fear the worst.

Now the Q and A

How do C.L. Bailey tables play? Specifically the Addison model. I would like opinions from more experienced players than myself. Recognizing the fact that this is the cheapest model Bailey makes.

Does anyone have a ball park estimate for assembly/disassembly of an 8' table? I have no information on this and it is definitely my biggest fear.

Can this table be disassembled unprofessionally to save cost, possibly even moved?

$1000 seems like a good price for a slate table plus Disassembly, moving and assembly. What do you guys think?

I know I have more questions, but I cant seem to think of them. If you have any suggestions please feel free to respond. Any advice will be helpful trust me. I am going to try to attach 4 or 5 photos of the table, but I am new to the whole "forums" thing, shockingly, so I wouldn't be surprised if I mess something up. Thank you so much for any responses. Pool tables are definitely a complicated buy.

The Pictures are of a Black Knight, not an Addison. A move job under $500 which includes a three hour drive EACH WAY? or TOTAL? If its each way you will have to find someone that does it on the side. A legitimate brick and mortar business I dont think will touch that price on a move job. With the tear down and set up you have a 9 hour job minimum. And you want them to recover in Simonis? $1250 is cheap for a home table. If you are trying to make it above the quality of the typical home table you need to raise you budget. Dont go cheap then regret it later you saved $400 or such.

CL Bailey tables play fine for a HOME table. If you are expecting them to play like a Gold Crown or Diamond Pro. Its not likely to happen without new rubber and professionally installed. Think about your priorities. Either you want a cheap table or you want a good playing table. Most of the time you have to choose. Everyone KNOWS SOMEONE that got a great table for nothing that plays perfect but thats not usually how it works. Good luck with your purchase!

C&C, thanks so much for your quick reply! With regards to moving the table we are trying to find the most efficient way to move it for the least amount of money. I definitely would prefer professional assembly, and I know I would regret anything less. As for disassembly/moving, if breaking down the table ourselves or with cheap help would be more economical than hiring a professional company for the whole thing then that would be preferred. The only problem I see here is that to my knowledge there is not a Billiards company to assemble the table in Tallahassee..... As you pointed out that is a 6 hour total trip for a company out of Jax..... And I didn't event think of that :/ And Im sure that a Jax to Tally, 6 hour round trip, assembly, refelt and leveling would cost way over $500. And if thats the case why not throw in disassembly, since I'm paying for their gas and time anyways. Which make me lean toward doing it myself, but that seems too risky.

As for the cloth, I'm not sure if I should go for the Simonis, which I priced around $235ish or go for a mid-range priced cloth. When it comes to the specifications of different felts, bumpers and such I'm not that educated. I want this table to play nice for a HOME table, but I'm not wanting to go all out with it. There are several places in Tallahassee I can go to play on some nice 9 foot Brunswick's, I just want a table that will provide both me and my roommate with a nice center piece to our living room, and play nice enough to get some desired practice. The question is can I get it done with my budget. Thanks again!

Maybe

You can get Realkingcobra (Glen) to comment - he probably could give you better answers for your situation.

Cool

Thanks for the input Snapshot. How would I go about getting ahold of him? Just a private message with a link to the thread?

Disassembly is not to hard and if you have a way to move it yourself you'll save alot. Having it setup and recovered with proform a lower priced worsted wool cloth should be below 500 at least around here it would be. That table for 1000 is not bad if the setup and recover is included if not 1000 is a little high.

The more I think about it, personally breaking it down seems to be our best option. My roommate and I have access to vehicles that could move the table in a few trips. Learning how to properly breakdown the table and finding a professional to recover it seems to be my obstacle now. Out of the $1000 that we are paying our friend for the table I think he is willing to devote 500 to the moving/recovery. I also need to do some better research on different felt options. ProForm seems to be a fairly priced, mid-range cloth grade. Thanks for the info and advice Jim! I'm definitely starting to get a better grasp on it.

Yes

Just a private message to RealKingCobra (glen) with a link to the thread would be good. He commented in that other thread about a guy wanting help for his friend's Pool room.

Don't get any better than that. The King has spoken! Glenn you are indeed a class act.
