Questions about phenolic parts

So, I've just been reading about the James White with the all phenolic handle...what's the story on that sort of cue construction? What could one expect that to play like? is it lighter or heavier (denser?) than wood? The idea of it sounds so strange, but I'm intrigued. Has this been done many times before?

Secondly, what's the story on phenolic inserts in shafts at the joint end? Is this just strictly for changing pin types on a shaft, or does it drill differently, providing a better mating surface (tighter fit) when the cue is screwed together.

Many assumptions--I await your answers. Please and thank you!
