Questions about used Valley barboxes

This question has probably been discussed before but I have some questions for the table mechs of AZB.

I am trying to watch the craigslists in the areas around me for a nice used Valley to put in my basement. I know they are not the most popular table type here on AZ but i feel it will work best for what I am needing right now. I would love to find a nice GC or Diamond nine footer but it just isnt in the cards for a variety of reasons.

My main question is what should I be looking for when I go to look at the tables? I have an eye for detail so if I know what to look for, I am hoping it will help me avoid a lemon or a table that is just too far gone for the price. I am hoping to keep my cost around $500 but have recently decided to up that a little bit if I can find a newer one that is in better shape.

Another question I was wondering about is what is the best way to move these tables? Is it required to break the table down to move it or could you move it assembled and only remove the legs to move it down the stairs? I was hoping to leave it assembled and move it down into my basement and then re-attach legs and level it. Would this risk damaging the internals of the table?

I appreciate any responses!

I am not a mechanic but I own 13 Valleys and one Dynamo.

Confirm the slate isn't cracked, rails are good (not hardened in spots or rubber loose from the subrail) and the frame isn't sagging too bad in the middle .... all old Valleys are slightly sagged in the middle. A good mechanic can help it but only so much. 7-footers don't sag nearly as much as 8-footers. The newer the better.

Since you won't be using the ESD or ball drop system don't worry about the mechanics unless you intend to sell it to a bar later on. You won't even need a magnetic cue ball. The gullys are pretty secure and shouldn't be a problem during a move.

It'll move easy, don't disassemble it, just turn it on its side onto a dolly and take off the legs. You may want to rent a truck with a lift gate or have three strong friends to put it in a pickup. Getting down stairs ... only you know what you'll need for that. Some boards and blankets with lots of help to hold it back sounds good right now.

Again ... I am not a mechanic! Hope some more experienced guys will chime in. Good Luck.

You can move it assembled, either in the back of a truck or on a trailer. Legs on or off, I have done both. When you go to move especially down stairs, I would have at least 3 guys to help control it going down the stairs. Where are you located? Their might be a mechanic with a deal on what your looking for. My advice be patient a good can be found.
