Questions on McDermott D-3 cue

Hi everyone,

I was looking at buying a McDermott D-3 cue from someone locally and had a few questions. (1) I noticed it says 21oz on the butt, so is this fixed or I can change it using some sort of weight bolts? (2) The "Bluebook" value from 2005 seems to be around $150, but I see people asking much closer to $300 on the forums. Is that because of the condition? or are these just becoming more collectors' items? (3) I guess this is completely subjective, but what are your thoughts as an everyday player?

Thanks so much for your advice!

There should be a weight bolt in it, the buttcap should be easy to pop off to check.

If it's in good shape (no finish issues, no cracks, no roll), getting over $150 for one is likely to happen. What usually happens is that a few people start to price things higher, there are few on the market, and others search for that price and then price it higher as well. I have been seeing this happening with Joss and Meucci cues, especially on Facebook where people are asking hundreds more for them than I feel the value is for them.

The Blue Book is typically unusable for pricing however in this case it isn't far off, $150 is about retail but guys can ask any price they want
The weight can be adjusted, in good condition value is $175, they are a decent playing cue but not collectors items.

Are weight bolts readily available for the older cues? I remember a thread a while back where a buy was looking for a McDermott weight bolt for an older cue but couldn't find it. It's possible he was looking for something special and it may not apply, just something I remembered.

Also, as an everyday player a McDermott is a great cue and I bet that older one will hit very nice as long as it was well taken care of.

There are some on eBay for the D models with screw in buttcap

I believe that the true market value of your D3, in excellent condition will be in the $200 to $300 range ( I sold a D11 in excellent original condition at general auction a few months ago for mid $200s -

I agree and the keyword there is "excellent". Think McDermott's bluebook is $145.00 on that cue.

Thanks, everyone. Good stuff. There shouldn't be an issue fitting a modern low deflection shaft to an old D model. Right?
There is one problem fitting a modern shaft to the original pin of a D series cue. The older McDermotts, D series included, have a 3/8x10 pin with a larger minor diameter than the modern 3/8x10 threads. I just had McDermott replace an older pin, in a RS model cue, to accommodate a Defy CF shaft, for $70 USD + shipping. I believe McDermott will re-tap one of their brand's shaft, to the larger minor diameter, at no charge.
