Questions regarding joints.......

Hello all who read and reply. I have been playing for years with Schon cues. I am currently using a/an STL 20 and it hits very solid. I saw a mottey for sale that I really like, but I have no idea how it will play or feel. The mottey in question has an ivory joint (sleeved) and ivory ferrules. I have heard that a flat-faced wood joint is supposed to be a soft hit, while the ss joints on the Schon's are the hardest. I am assuming the ivory joint falls somewhere in-between? Anybody have any insight? Thanks in advance for opinions and advice, Scott

As far as Mr. Mottey's cues, I can tell you they play great. The problem you may occur is that you are used to a forward punch with your Schon because of the Stainless joint. The flat face will hit softer and have less deflection and even though it's what I prefer, it's not for every one.

Mike your dead on.

Also the flat face will produce a cleaner, crisper hit, that you can "feel" compared to other type joints.

Blud, could you give a defination of a "crisp hit", i'm young (lol), and that term is never used around here...

Thanks,

Description? A can of worms for arguing.

You thought that too???

Thanks,

Jon

P.S. A double threaded steel joint??? Oh come on...

Been watching the WPC on tv and been trying to observe the joints of cues that the pros play with and I commonly see Ivory, (I assume tha it is 'coz its white and I don't believe they use ABS or PVC) SS Steel and Black Phenolic... somewhere out there maybe a wood joint.

Of course there's no telling if it's a flat-faced or piloted. The most I've seen is Ivory and SS Steel.

Don't the pros like the feel of a wood joint?

Probably but if they want durability too.
Phenolics come in white too.

You mean if they want durability they'd rather use phenolic or SS Steel?

I changed one of my cues implex joint to a wood joint but the shaft still had it's implex ring and I like the hit and feel of the cue. Might change the shaft collar later. Was wondering if any of the known pros have it on their cues.

BigJon, I have been playing with a David Kikel cue with a piloted stainless steel joint since 1999. I had my wrist operated on in Nov. 2003. Believe me, I feel every bit of the hit in my wrist. I have changed to flat faced Ivory and can tell you for sure what "CRISP HIT" feels like. The Ivory or a wood to wood joint cause much less pain.

How bout this joint?
OK, wrong joint.
I'm cutting some antlers this weekend.
They hit nice too. Wood to wood hit nice but it could swell or shrink.
One of the best hitting sticks I ever tried was a Scruggs sneaky with no collar. That's wood to wood.
But, the wood's face swelling or shinking or crushing scare me.

Jon, first of your wrong in your thinking I said you were a wannabe. This is the second time I've written this.OK?
I'll help you, joey or whoever needs it, friend.

Crisp, to means clean hit, sound, sharp hit and feel. Kinda like a snaping sound, it not only sounds good, it also feels good, and crisp like an early spring morning. The deaf, they can just imagine what it sounds like, but they do have a better sence of feel than those who can hear.Hope this helps.

Joey,
this can be elimanated. Some cuemakers do not relieve the face of the butts joint and the shafts joint end. 2, things can happen, first the cue will not tighten up and stay tight, and 2nd, the cue will swell as you spaek of. When relieveing these you need to do both. Not just one

If swelling continues, use some super/glue, [zap-a-gap, pink] it's very thin, on the faces. Work it around the face of both the butt, and shafts joint. Do your best not to let it go down into the shafts threads. if this happens, use a tap, and hand re-tap the shaft. Also watch out for glue on the joint pin.Clean if nessseary.

Ok, we are square.

Ok, i get what you are saying. Thanks.

We have a deaf player here (at least i think he is deaf) that plays good, maybe it's because he can't hear all of the bad choices people make at the Juke Box, i'm thinking about taking some ear plugs with me...

Thanks,

Ok, wouldn't it be better to do this in the first place though? And do it right before you glue the joint pin in? I saw a blud sneaky on ebay, that looked like that had been done on the joint ends. I see why now, i had been wondering.
Would this be necessary, with threaded on collars (with a really tight thread btw :D )?

Thanks,

Jon

So, are you saying that you've developed into a real "limp wrist" kind of guy??  ;) :D

Bilt in joke and you beat me to it, good one. Oh well maybe someone will start a thread about shafts or wood.
