Okay, this is a thread to potentially reduce the friction caused in racking.

The question is how many of you would be interested in volunteering to rack 9 ball at the Derby City Classic or the US Open.

There would be some brief training involved and a protocol that would need to be followed but that's about it.

There wouldn't be any pay involved but the volunteers would be required to have a cell phone which would be used to clock the speed of the break.

The volunteers would of course be required to rack the balls consistently with a particular rack of the event's choice, most likely a template rack.

If you have an interest in volunteering for either of these two events, please contact me by PM or in this thread, your choice.

If you wish to discuss the subject, by all means, please do so in this thread. I will most likely be putting this out on Facebook but wanted to post this request here on AZB as well.

Thanks,

It seems to me that either event should be able to do something for the rackers. I think a minimum would be a season pass and a free meal each day.

My initial thought when seeing this, was that is would be a neat way to see the pro players up close and to interact with them.

Then I realized that the pro players themselves probably have the best racking techniques to be able to obtain a good rack, since they rack scores of times a day and know the importance of a tight rack.

Racking to obtain a good rack is a skill of it's own. If these volunteers just throw racks up there and the players can't request a re-rack, I can't imagine the type of grief these volunteers might get from some of the players.

Anyway, good idea in principle, but I don't even think that I feel comfortable enough with my own racking technique and quality to rack for some of these very picky pro players.

I just don't see it helping. Having amateurs take a brief protocol seminar and then inserting them into the middle of a professional match seems like a recipe for disaster.

It has worked for golf.

This is how I feel about it....but no more than a four hour shift per day.

Why not just use a magic rack? Don't they eliminate the gaps?
I, for one, would not want that job no matter the incentive. I could just see myself getting blamed if someone scratches or doesn't make a ball on the break.

The refs are volunteers? Racking is essentially ball placement after a ruling in Golf. Don't think they trot out amatuers to handle that for the pros.

I like the tall brunette referee type. Professionalism and class all the way.

Golf knows how to take care of their game....there are many people in the pool world
that I feel are just as good people as golf marshals.
Pred, if you don’t know any pool players like that, get the hell away from that dive you’re
playing out of....:D

I mentioned in my first post that a template rack would be used if we have volunteer rackers.

Yes, cell phones can record break speeds.

Yes, it would be great if the rackers received a small compensation as Bob Jewett suggested.

Yes, golf has MANY amateur enthusiasts who volunteer at professional matches.

Yes, it is a chance to get close to the professional players and if they were to see you wearing a STAFF shirt I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving you a few pool tips but you had better be racking well. :)

The players would not be allowed to verbally abuse the rackers, just as the players are not allowed to abuse the referees.

A 4 hour shift makes sense.

One thing I am concerned with is: How many tables could one person handle by themselves without slowing down the event?

If I can't verbally abuse Earl, Shaw, Shane, and that GD Melling, plus Kaci, Filler, and Ruslan I'm not betting on a single one of those bums!!! Not to mention Jeremy Jones, if that no talent hack is in the booth, y'all can kiss my other side(or the front) I ain't spending a confederate nickle on that waste of bandwidth!!!

Hope you know I'm kidding

I don't see the problem. Every single one of you here knows how to rack balls. You're not building a rocket going to Mars. I think it would be a great experience for the volunteers and a chance to get involved.

True, even 10yo school boys soccer team have volunteers line judges and referees.

Involving more people into running pool events can't hurt.

How would you record the break speed? I have the predator app. In that you need to mark the position of the cue ball and have the phone on the end rail. Is the racker going to mark the cue ball position and then set the phone down? If the player moves the cue ball, will the racker jump back in and reposition it in the app? If the phone dies, will the match pause while it recharges? I think you’d be begging for a lot of player complaints if you use the app.

I'm thinking that the break speed will just has to be OVER a certain speed and anywhere in the kitchen and over that certain speed will be fine. May have to test various apps to see which ones will work best.
Still discussing. Good points. But like others have mentioned, racking with a template rack isn't rocket science.
