I wouldn't ever give myself a loose rack or an off angle rack unless I'm trying to rig the rack to make the 9 or something, but thats cheating.

Rack tight and straight

Anything other than the tightest, straightest rack you can produce is unacceptable, regardless of whether you are racking for yourself or your opponent.

Win or lose based on your skill with the cue...not with how you manipulate the rack.

Joe Tucker has a video called Racking Secrets showing how you can take advantage of gaps, loose racks, and other imperfections in 8-ball, 9-ball, and 14.1.

I agree with Greyghost, in league play I try to give myself and my opponent the tightest rack aligned as straight as possible.

Quoting Jean Balukas, beat me with skill, not luck.

haha, nice..
Well my town is full of lairs, cheats, and guys always looking for any angle to run a hustle.. setting up a rack to make a ball cant be that bad! lol

besides, if you dont know how to set up a rack, how can you tell if someone is doing it to you?

So what about the order of balls in the rack?

All I need to know is what a good rack looks like.

According to the rules, in 9 ball, 1 on the point and 9 in the middle...everything else is supposed to be random.
8-ball...8 in the middle and one of each suit on the two back corners...everything else is supposed to be random.

If you are playing with someone who cheats, call them out. If you try to cheat on me, I will call you out.

It doesn't have to be difficult.

what does spotted balls have to do with a random rack?

Rules state random rack as said before, 8 ball (1 infront/8center) 9ball (1infront/9center)

The order of the other balls is not significant unless your pattern racking....which is against the rules

When spotting balls (Taken from the BCA website)

SPOTTING BALLS
When specific game rules call for spotting balls, they shall be replaced on the table on the long string after the stroke is complete. A single ball is placed on the foot spot; if more than one ball is to be spotted, they are placed on the long string in ascending numerical order, beginning on the foot spot and advancing toward the foot rail. When balls on or near the foot spot or long string interfere with the spotting of balls, the balls to be spotted are placed on the extension of the long string “in front” of the foot spot (between the foot spot and the center spot), as near as possible to the foot spot and in the same numerical order as if they were spotted “behind” the foot spot (lowest numbered ball closest to the foot spot)..

In one pocket and straight pool the order does not matter, as is the nature of the two games.

hope that helps,

given the context of your post, I assume when you say "if you are spotting balls" you meant..If you were gambling with someone playing 9ball and are giving/receiving a spot such as the 7 and 8 would you rack the balls differently.

If the above is a true statement, yes the balls would be racked differently. The 1ball up front, the two balls being spotted behind it, the 9 ball in the middle, and the remaining balls racked randomly to complete the rack.

Jason<---If this is inaccurate, disregard everything above this line.

Obviously, you aren't me, so it doesn't matter.
I don't gamble at pool, I teach people how to use their cue stick to win.
That doesn't seem to be what you are interested in. If you are looking for short cuts, or ways to beat the system, you may not find a lot of help here.

Delta 13 rack

I find it much easier to rack with the Delta than any other I have used.

It is also indestructible.
