rail cushion facings

Why are they necessary? Don`t the manufacturers of cushion rubber make them long enough to produce tight pockets?Did the Anniversary and GC tables used for tournaments in the 50`s and 60`s have their pockets tightened with facings,or is this a more recent development. Thanks.
 
I dont think they are meant to be shims. The pocket facings are stiffer than the rail rubber so they dont deform and spit balls out of the pockets on balls shot into them (ie balls hit down the rail).
 
They protect the end of the rail from the repeated impact of the balls, and protect the balls from the repeated impact against the end of the rail.
