Ralph Soquet out of the U S Open

I was talking with Ralph Souquet at the recently concluded Joss Turning Stone Tournament after he was just knocked out and i told Raplh that i would see him at the U S Open next month and he replied. Sorry, not going to make it. I have another commitment/tournament in Poland that I have already committed to. So it loks like no Ralph this year. a real bummer since i love watching him play..........................mike
 
In Poland?
I know they had one of those "World Pool League" tournaments in Poland in 2003.That particuliar tourney featured six excellent players including:
Reyes, Hohmann, Ortmann, Drago, Hsia and Morris.

It's a points system(round robin) 9 ball tourney as I have an 18 DVD set from that tourney in 2003.I can't see Poland hosting a tourney like that at the same time as the US Open however.I wonder what tourney or commitment(in Poland) Soquet is referring to?

Did a search and found out that there will be another "World Pool League" event in Poland commencing Sept 29th,2006 until Oct 1st.

The US Open 9 ball championship is being held Sept 25th to Oct 1st,henceforth a clash.
That tournament in Poland will draw six top notch players including:
Orcollo,Hohmann,Soquet,Babica,Feijen and Cha Ching Wu.The prize money is real good as each player is guaranteed to make a minimum $3000, with the winner getting 20K, 2nd 10K and 3rd and 4th getting 7K.

Considering the US Open has over 200 enteries and the World Pool League only has 6 players I can really $ee why Soquet and others would choose it over the US Open.For more info on the 2006 World Pool League tourney, check this link:

Bummer! No Hohmann,Soquet,Wu,Feijen or Orcullo at this years US Open.That's some pretty awesome talent that will be missing.

RJ... it is indeed a bummer that these great players wont be at the open. but if i am not mistaken the players committed to this tournament before the Open had to change it's dates because of the IPT scheduling conflict.
And thanks for the info on the tournament in Poland............mike
 
I'm a bit befuddled as to why a tournament as prestigious and historical as the US Open would find it hard to cough up better prize money. This is one of the majors, and people who win this are a cut above the rest. I think they deserve a bit more than what they're getting now.

I've never seen this contest live here in the Philippines either, something I wish would happen soon.
 
The main reason in my opinion for the low money is because of several factors.

1)... Pool is a sport that the industry, in my own opinion, does not support financially. Yes you see alot of sponsors names on posters and flyers for all the tours and such. but i believe that most of them provide product instead of cash.

2)...Pool is maybe, and i mean maybe, starting to just come out of the perceived back rooms (the IPT) and into the main stream. That we can thank Kevin trudeau for if he follow thru with his plans.

I do know that in some cities like Chesapeake Virginia where the U S Open is held the city actually puts up some money towards the purse. Alot of cities would probably do the same if approached by legitimate promoters to help them out. Other than the IPT there are not to many people who are willing to shell out the money needed to finance such endeavors. except for a couple.
