Re: Matthew Janis of the Viking Tour

As most of Matt's friends from the pool scene know he joined the US Army several months ago. For those who sent letters or postcards to him while he was in Boot Camp he sais thank you, they helped keep him going through the rough times.

His latest good news is that he graduated Boot Camp and is now entering his job training phase. The not so great news is that instead of his 11 weeks of additional training they have cut it down to only 6 weeks.

For me, his Father, the worst news is that they will be deploying him A.S.A.P. to serve in Korea about 30 miles from the border. Fortunately at this time it's not as bad as it could have been since they are not sending him to Iraq. Matt seems pleased and told me he is pleased to being going to Korea because they will be giving him extra pay for as the Army put it "Hardship Pay".

If anyone would like to write him he has a new address.

Janis, Matthew

The above address will only be good for about the next month.

Mike, I served in Korea after my tour in Vietnam. I assure you, Korea is a cakewalk. I'm glad he's not going to Bush's folly--the senseless conflict in Iraq.

Your son will have the time of his life: exposure to an entirely different culture, a wealth of experiences he'll remember all his life, and his libido will be well taken care of. I wish him the best. I'm sure he'll love it.

Mike,
It is us that should say "thanks" to Matt and everyone else in the Armed Forces for keeping us safe and allowing us the freedom that we have. God bless.
