RE:SUGARTREE-Review

Posted this in the main section, thought it probably belongs here more than there.

I would like to start with that I'm not even close to being very known or an established forums member but I hope my review will be respected, for the fact that I love cues and am always researching and gathering as much information and experience with them as possible. Though I have a long way to go in my journey I will give my review to the best of my ability.

Years ago I became obsessed with the game and soon after fell in love with cues and how each one can perform differently. Being I was hooked I started reading about custom cues and their makers and soon came across Eric Crisp (Sugartree Cues.) I knew I had to have one not just based on their look, but because of the things people had to say about his cues were needless to say intense. Words were flying around like a scepter, or magic wand, even people saying it made the cue feel like it was one with your arm. The timing was not right for me, so I decided to play around with some other customs and feel them out.

By no means were any of the other customs bad in any way, each had a specific hit and difference to them. Some hit soft when others hit stiff and then we had the in-between. I learned that a stiff and crisp hitting cue was for me, and I even went as far as to have one of my favorite cue makers make me a custom specific to my liking. And when I mean specific I mean it. Other than cue butt diameter; everything from weight, balance point, shaft diameter and shaft specs for the ferrule material and tip to create a crisp and stiff hitting cue. I was extremely picky but it was done for me and I was pleased.

After a year and a half it was my main player but it just didn't fill the void of wanting to try other things. I tried many others and continuously went back to my player. This killed me because I had spent mindless amounts of money, which was well spent but still did not feel as if I found the right cue for me.

Finally the time had come to find a Sugar, thanks to our own Fredintheloo, it happened for me pretty quick. First I will start with the finish. It's fantastic, granted Mark took very well care of it, and the quality of the wood is insane. Figuring on both the rosewood and curly maple definitely bring to light the fact that Eric truly shows respect for his wood and craftsmanship. Seeing the micro-rings that Eric is known for in person, was truly a treat. Next is balance; it seemed a little forward balance but for the 19.2 oz weight that it is, it felt insanely agile and comfortable in my hands. The diameter at the very butt of the cue was slightly larger than I was used to, but still felt awesome. I noticed that it is thicker than a Diveney, but not as thick as a Rambo. Now to the fun part, the feel of the hit. I don't say this lightly but I have never felt so comfortable on the table before now. This is the stiffest hitting cue I've ever hit with and it is crisp to a tee, down to the sound, everything gave me goosebumps. A few people at the hall said it was a little loud for them, but both shafts have Eric's own Sugar tips installed which is known as a harder tip. I just so happen to love the "Ping" noise when I stroke through whitey. Ball control happens with ease and applying english is now fun because nothing is sacrificed compared to my previous experiences. Eric once said that his goal was to create a cue that makes the game easier, and for me Eric has achieved that and I couldn't be happier. Thanks Mr. Crisp for being such a dedicated craftsman, you truly have made a lot of people happy in the pool world, including me.

Hope everyone enjoyed my review, wish I could have been more descriptive, but my girlfriend keeps giving me dirty looks... It's movie night . I ask one thing, please do not ask what other cues I have tried for the sole fact that I respect the makers and their work. I wish to uphold the integrity of their names, for those who have yet to try them. This was a Sugartree review not a comparison.

I recently picked up a Sugartree cue myself and agree it is the best hitting cue that I've ever owned. I just wish I could find one of his cues with a wrap. Normally I can't play with a wrapless cue but mine plays so good it doesn't bother me not to have a wrap.

I think Eric did very few cues with a wrap, I've heard the same problem a couple times on this site. I'm glad your shooting well with it other wise, I too can not seem to put mine down
