Real Improvement

Pool is not cool - get a new hobby...

I'm going to start bowling, or see if I can get on a softball team.

As I said before, there is no such thing as ‘muscle memory’. So the only thing we are training when we train is our minds. .

I'm not a therapist but anyone that has undergone EMDR will tell you that muscle memory does exist. (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

This process was discovered by Dr Shapiro in 1995. Some of our professional athletes undergo EMDR sessions. This is not hypnosis and the patient is wide awake. Not only do patients under EMDR recover memories from many years past (some from the age of 6 months old) they also feel the exact muscle pains as occurred at that time.

EDMR is not something the common person can use and is associated with trauma events. The goal is to provide information that can help us play pool better, it EDMR can help then lets use it. The information I am trying to get out is helpful and in the testing I have performed has worked. In fact, understanding exactly how the mind works is critical to improving our skill. A good dose of skepticism is useful as it keeps everyone alert for bs.

As I stated, Professional players in Football, Baseball,.. use EMDR for enhancing their game which is not trauma related. There are other uses for EMDR outside of trauma.

Additionally I brought this up to prove "Muscle Memory" does exist.

Now that we understand what roles our minds play, we can find out how to use them to perform their best.

We have all heard these familiar phrases;

Practice Makes Perfect – If this were true then many would be great players as much time at some put in.

Your Game Will Get Worse Before It Gets Better – Why is this? With the right methods you game should start to improve from where it is.

Both of these familiar phrases have the same thing in common; they both demonstrate that the current practice methods can be improved upon. To go even further, I would say pocketing balls does more to keep you at your current level than anything else. Because you practice the same habits over and over there is no way to make a change. Only by change and practicing that change correctly can you make any improvements.

For instance, if you practice pocketing balls, what happens when you miss? Did you move? Did you not hit where you wanted? Do you have a method of verifying either of these? If you don’t then how do you know what changes to make.
