Realistically, what should promoters focus on when it comes to pro pool?

This could be hilarious with a good commentator like Strickland, especially if any reigns were removed and let him roll with the game.
As long as they are playing 9b or 10b. Watching him commentate 1P he's lost.

I'm in the process of developing a system for running tournaments where participants get a fixed bankroll and can then go make games to move up or down on the leaderboard. It has a "rake" of sorts built in: the administrator can increase the minimum bet, remove points from players who dodge action, and establish a cut line, as in golf tournament, to bring the tournament to a conclusion.

It should be ready for testing in the next 8 weeks or so. If there is anyone with a room, or who is currently running tournaments who would like to give it a test drive, I'd be happy to make the system available and even kick in some swag for players that are willing to share feedback.

I'm in the DC area, so somewhere local would be idea, but even further afield would be great.
So, I've finished the first version of the application. It is available now in the Android store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alcachofra.the_tank_billiards_tour

The idea is that there is one device for each table, and a one for the tournament organizer. You can have as many players as you like, set the bankroll, impose a rake event, set a cut line, increase minimum bets, all sorts of tools to move a tournament along and keep players making games. If anyone would like to use it/try it for running an event, I'd be happy to help with support and grateful for feedback.

There's no fee to download or use the application and no ads. I don't get a dime if you use. I just thought it would be a fun thing to build.

Chinese 8 ball is the most popular billiards game. It’s also only second to Snooker in viewership. Snooker draws 60 million viewers on the Chinese sport channel…Chinese 8 ball 40 million.
Interesting that you rarely if ever see either of these games played in Tournaments in Bars.

There is the problem with pool, you have to go hang out in a poolroom to see it and most people who are not regular pool players won't do that.

What game is played in bars? In Canada 98% of pool played in bars is 8 ball. In the UK it’s Blackball. In Russia,…In Brazil…. In the USA everyone might play 9 ball but the word ‘Pool’ is synonymous with other billiard games around the world in bars.

A sports viewership popularity and public participation is irrelevent. Statistically close to zero percent of American adults play NFL rules football. However it has more viewership than a sport like horse shoes that more adults actually play.

Awesome content is the answer.

They want the mainstream crowds but the hardcore crowd is still their main viewing audience. And the hardcore crowd sometimes cannot come to a conclusion as to what version of the pro game should be presented.

So I ask you, put yourself in the shoes of match room, the predator group or accustats and even the NBL group. What would you focus on to bring pro pool to the masses?

I remember Darren appleton' world pool series started with 8 ball but eventually moved to 9 ball.

So should everyone just focus on 9 ball? Winner breaks? Alternate breaks? Universal rules like break boxes? Let's hear some suggestions.

Or does it not matter what they do?

There may be a point in this but damned if I know what it is.

Pool is where it is because of the gambling fiasco, where Vegas set odds, and the players rigged the tourney. Unfortunately, there is a dark underbelly of pool where you can’t be sure two guys aren’t working together, and chopping up money later on. It’s great that new people are trying new ideas, but the general public has very little interest in pool. It’s really a tough game to understand at the pro level, unless you play well, yourself. I think the game is as big as it’s ever going to be, and all we are doing is diluting the already thin fan base, with all of the rule changes to make pool “better for tv”. I really don’t even watch events anymore, and I was one of those hardcore fans that used to watch matches, buy Accu Stats tapes, etc, etc. If they can’t keep my interest in their product, what hope do they have of attracting John Q public? Slim to none. I know we all love the game, but I think it’s time that pool players recognized that we are in the vast minority. With the advent of video games, pool started dwindling off with kids back in the 80s and 90s. That’s when we lost pool.
One questionable match didn’t put pool in its current spot.

There’s people on this site who were there, the handle at the book was small. I’ve heard the story from both sides. Who knows what’s true?

But lots more had to go wrong than just that.

There needs to be an added attraction besides just a pool tournament. I don’t think pool is a good spectator sport and the game is too easy. The payouts are always top heavy where it’s just not worth playing if you’re just an average Joe.

Now if you make it a good food and drink event people will come. Cheesesteaks, hoagies, real burgers, steak, good coffee, ice cream, and alcoholic beverages, this will attract people.

And to be able to watch main event matches, bleacher seats are needed to get a good view.

I’ll never be a promoter but I do like to eat good tasting food.
