Realistically, what year does this headline happen?

Just like poker, which doesn't require running, jumping, or slapping your opponent, big money will draw the sponsors. We have to come up with some decent money tournaments in oder to attract these sponsors.

When you have to run a 100 yard dash between each shot, and still have to beat the 30 second shot clock. Otherwise there is no need for a running shoe sponsor in pool.

How about for SPEED pool!?

Which always seems to bring us back to that fact that big money won't come near pool because of the behavior of some of the players/people around the sport and those people often behave that that way because there is so little money to go around.

I'd just like to say I've seen less gambling on a poker table than in a round of golf. Bet on closest to the hole, money per stroke. Bet off the tee longest drive. "10-1 you can't hit that shot again". Who can chug a beer the fastest. "5 bucks says you can't clear that sandtrap with the golfcart"

Okay the last two are a joke. But people who think golf isgame without gambling are sadly mistaken.

Who said golf is a game without gambling? I'm confused as to where this is coming from... I thought we were talking about why Nike doesn't sponsor pool? which, by the way, has nothing to do with gambling and much to do with the lack of athletics involved.

Poker made itself by having high entry fee tournies that paid out a ton of money and viewers follow the money (remember poker players act no better than pool players) How many pool players can you get to put up 10k and play for 1 million dollar first prize?

When Throsten won the 350k is was sportscenters #1 highlight of the night, because the prize warranted ESPN showing it. The sponsors will follow but we have to start our own buzz.

Sorry Lodini I should have quoted

When pool players will stop to gamble and hustle

You don't see top golf or tennis players gamble and have "money games" do you?

....

I'd be curious to know if anyone has promoted themselves to Nike. Perhaps that's all it would take. Probably would be a huge endorsement and it'd have to be on a huge name in the industry but I'd imagine it'd be possible.

Oh, ok... my bad. I totally missed that post. I'm with you then. I definitely don't agree that gambling is the reason Nike isn't involved in pool. Every sport inspires gambling. I've been watching my dad bet on football since I was a little kid and I have participated in many NCAA Basketball pools. I know people that go so far as to gamble on baseball! (ugh... why? I can't figure that out... LOL) Anyway, let's be realistic here... people will use any excuse to gamble.

Interesting topic, but that specific headline will probably never happen unless pool rules change to include lots of running and jumping. I don't see Nike sponsoring a sport where you are sitting half the time, and walking slowly around a 9 foot area the other half. Add in the smoking drinking that go hand-in-hand with pool and a sports company would not touch pool with a 60" cue. Outside of the so-called "sin" products, I don't see a solid advertiser for pool. Look at one of the few that tried, Kevin T., he is barely one step away from a wild-west tonic salesman. Who else did pool have recenty.. well, there are the billiard product makers.. duh. Then there is Camel, we have Guiness overseas, I think some whisky company had a big sponsorship a while back. I don't think any respectable company put their money in pool since the 60s, even then it was rare.

I don't understand that line of thought. NASCAR sponsered by beer used to have cigs as well and it's a sport that is brought to bear by drinking rednecks and yet still has all the sponsership it needs.

[Disclaimer]
Should add to this I like racing although I'm not much a drinker, and my opinion does not reflect all fans of NASCAR just pointing out the stereotype.

I'd say that it's the type of gambling that goes on more then the gambling itself.

Common things I've heard/seen about pool gambling.
1. "I knew I was F$#K'ed so I went out the bathroom window"
2. "When he said he didn't have the money, that's when the S$%T stated"
3. Players match up for some big cash and one of them dumps, costing his backer some serious cash. The players later meet up so the loosing player can get his cut.
4. Player who is in the money and still in the tournament drops out because there is some hot action at another location.
5. "So this well known pro walks in with his head shaved and a fake beard. I spotted him right off, but not many others did. We just sat back and watched him rake it in from the suckers"

I play a little golf here and there and I hang out on a few golf forums as well, I just don't see gambling stories like that.

Maybe if pool players got mad, and lit into one another more often (as they do in NASCAR or hockey) maybe we could entice more redneck's
(your term) into sweating pool matches instead of twisting their necks off waiting for a crash. They do consume lots of beer, don't they ? Just trying to find a way for pool to gain "mass" appeal !
