Really big payout

At Pebble Beach you have to stay at the hotel. One round per night of stay. The rounds run about $800/pp. If you go with three buddies, you can rent a 4 bedroom fairway suite for $7500/night. On the cheap, you can squeak by for under $2000/round.
Or you can play here: https://www.pinonhillsgolf.com/ for 50bux. Spectacular scenery. Kinda in the middle of nowhere but worth the visit.

Pebble Beach is like owning Rolex President, it is a status thing.

Most phone tell time.
WTF??? Its one one of the finest tracks on the planet. If there wasn't the demand they would get what they ask. Lot of top courses that are $250+ for just the green fee.

Have friends who are hard core Golfers, they pay crazy money to play bucket list courses.

I’ll pass.

I think the sponsors of golf are talking to CEOs mostly. I suspect that sometimes it is a CEO saying to other CEOs, "I can sponsor a golf series to the tune of $60M and you can't." And the salt is applied when they are out on a course. ;)
As a small time company In this industry I can say that I do aspire to be as big of a sponsor as I can be and that ego and even anger at some competitors plays a part.

I think you are probably correct that some it is driven by what the CEO wants to do and some of what that person wants is likely driven by pride and competitiveness.

But I am not so sure about how much latitude a CEO of a publicly traded company has to direct the marketing dollars without substantive justification.
