Really sweaty grip hand! What can I do?

Well, summer is definitely here and the humidity has been really high, which means I'm sweating! If my bridge hand gets too bad I wear a glove, I've got no problem doing that. But lately my grip hand is getting pretty sweaty too. It's usually okay if I'm playing someone because I get some downtime while they're shooting and things dry out. But when I practice by myself my linen grip is actually becoming soaking wet! This can make things a little slippery.

Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do? Last night I was rubbing the grip off with toilet paper every once in a while, that seemed ok but wasn't really ideal. I had to do it about once every 10 minutes. The humidity was so bad that the chalk was actually wet! I know that wasn't from me because I picked up a piece that hadn't been used in hours and it was still wet!

I don't really like leather or wood grips, and I don't want to change my cue right now. Leather seems too sticky and bare wood seems too slippery to me. My break cue is bare wood and I ended up putting a rubber grip over it. I don't really want to put rubber on my nice playing cue though. Also I was worried about leather because of my sweat. Would that cause a lot of wear where my hand usually is?

Thanks for any input!

I guess you could wear glove on that hand, too -- not a pool glove, a lightweight cotton glove, maybe one with sequins if you want to be flamboyant.

They actually offer those at the counter where I play. It's kind of popular in Korea with cushion players, but I absolutely will not do that!! Also the gloves feel funny. I've worn them when cleaning balls. They're not lightweight though, they're a little like those one-size-fits-all gloves you can buy at walgreens.

You know what they say if your hands don't sweat when you play pool?.....you are not betting enough ;)

This sound cold, cruel and obvious, but for a friend of mine it works. He simply cuts down on liquids before playing, and doesn't drink much while playing.

Ever hear of kidney stones?

They're awful.

Cutting down on liquids a lot, and dehydrating oneself like that isn't a good idea.

Ya wanna hear about the pain those stones cause?? I can tell you what it really feels like... Take if from me... reducing one's fluid intake over a long period, and some gambling sessions sure can fit that bill, is not smart.

Spray with antipersperant...

Do like skiers do to keep their feet dry, spray your hands with antipersperant.

Aside from using a towel (buy one though), try using a thick rubberband and wrap it around your index and middle finger (and ring finger... what-have-you) with enough pressure so that your fingers can get circulation.

I used to do this with my cue but it turns out that I did away with it because slip stroking my shots seems very "zen".

I have the same problem

Its odd, sometimes my hands sweat so bad I will actually saturate a linen wrap. Other times its hardly at all. Your nerves may, actually probally do play a role. I just try to wash my hands as much as possible. That seems to help.

One of my staff has this problem and when I shake his hand it felt like he had carried a fish or something. I told him this is what we used in the Marines for our feet before long humps. It works real good on hands too. Just make sure you wash them.
Thats almost nasty.But funny.

Once you get out of the shower get a stick of Anti-persperant and rub all over your hands. Once it is in your skin you can wash your hands and that stuff takes about 8~12 hours to wear off. You can eat and use your hands without worry after you wash them. The anti gets down into the skin and stays there. You should not have sweaty hands. Just make sure to have clean hands when you apply. If you have it real bad keep a stick in your case and wash up then apply again. Great advice

Rob, thanks for this idea. I will try it. Only problem is, nobody here (Korea) wears deodorant/anti-perspirant. It's really expensive when I need to buy it and now I'll need it for two areas!

Very cool idea!

I'm the same way, and I'm sure at times it has to do with nerves. But the worst time, as I mentioned, is when I just practice by myself. No nerves there, just lots of time with my hand on the grip!

Sweaty hands

My hands sweat also and I try to go and wash my hands just before I play and this works pretty well for me. If i'm playing in a real warm humid place I have to break out my sure-shot glove to use on my bridge hand.
