Refelting a table - glue or staples?

A friend has a table that's well overdue for a refelt job that I'm going to help with. I did a bunch of refelt jobs years ago, but I always used a power stapler to staple the felt to the wood under the rails.

Any reason we should use spray glue instead? If so, what kind?

I never use staples, let alone glue. I've always tacked my bedcloth, 1.5 inches on center. Nothing prettier than a beautifully tacked bedcloth. :)

Glue is only used on bar table slate, which has no wood backing to staple (or tack) the cloth to.

Staples are the way to go. Tacks take to much time to do. Glue alone simply will not hold well in the pockets over time. Everybody has a different way of doing it. It will also depend on the cloth you are using. Some glues do not hold as well on some cloths. For instance, the brunswick centennial cloth is a ***** to glue because of the teflon additive. You can't go wrong with staples in any instance

Felt/cloth

Why are you considering changing the method that you are already familiar with? Can't go wrong with staples if there is wood to staple it to. Use glue when there is no wood.

Good luck!

Most of the new tables I do have framed slate and I use staples when I can. I have noticed on several tables I've re-clothed that some people will glue the cloth on framed slate. Others will glue the cloth on the sides and then staple the pockets.

Staples are the way to go. You can make it tighter. And if you have to redo a section becuase it has wrinkles or a defect in it. It is easier to pull some staples then put some back in.

Sometimes certain tables (like Leisure bay/American Heritage, craftmaster, etc) have slate liners that almost look like slate backing. I've noticed many companies still glue those. Even with slate liner to staple. We staple the slate liner. However it is better to have backed slate.

Simonis can suck to glue also. Espeically because the people who spend the extra money (Yet didn't spend it on their POS table) want it pefect.

What kind of table is it?
