Having removed irish linen do you tape the naked handle or leave it as is while refinishing in preparation for a new leather wrap.

I would tape it. You want to preserve the depth of the wrap channel while refinishing

Doesn't the channel have to be a little deeper to replace the linen with leather?

Maybe yes, maybe no. Of course it all depends on the original depth and thickness of the leather
