refinish questions

I came across this butt that was my first cue. The shafts I no longer have. The reason I quit using this is because the butt cap flares out and it doesn't fit into some cases. I had the original shafts converted to schon shafts and eventually traded them. What my question is "is it possible to get the butt cap replaced and the joint collars to match. Would prefer a black butt cap and collars. Also when I had it made the guy never put a finish so the butt is blue from playing. Is it possible to get the blue out and gloss it up. also I would like 2 shafts around 12.8 with a stiff hitting taper. If anyone can do this what would the price be? Thanks and here are the pictures. Just wondering who would be willing to do this?

Hi,

Just have someone taper turn the butt cap into a conventional taper and refinish the cue.

A very easy and inexpensive job. I am sure most guys would turn the butt cap for free if they do the refinish work for you.

Easy and inexpensive, I beg to differ.
That cue shows no sign of ever having finish other than the phenolic jnt. collar.
There is quite a bit of chalk embedded in the pores of the wood and will not easily come out.
If the owner doesn't mind the cue being about .020" smaller in diameter when he gets it back
then it can be done. I'm not bidding the job because I don't want it.

Two new shafts and an intensive refinish, yeah, you're looking at about $400.
Is the cue worth it???

KJ

KJ,

I would not want it for that price either.. But since the cue has no shafts taking a few light taper cuts is a lot easier than prepping and removing an old finish with dents.

400.00 sounds too cheap IMO.

This cue doubtless has a sentimental value to the OP. 500.00 or so to many people is chump change when restoring their first cue into a player. I think it is pretty cool and nostalgic.

I'm sure it looks worse in the pictures as far as chalk in the pores, etc. If you want to replace the joint collars, and furnish new shafts, imo that's your biggest expense. If you simply trim down the buttcap and take a light pass, i'm sure it will turn out fine. Maybe I missed it, but what kind of cue is that??

I would leave it as original as possible, but that's just me.
good luck!

Does the butt plate have enough material for any more cuts? That bumper looks pretty big. If there's also a big cavity under it, there won't be a lot of material to turn off.
