Refinishing a cue with a wrap

Long ago Darrin Hill told me of a technique for refinishing a cue with an existing wrap. I have since forgotten what he told me and have a cue I want to refinish myself that has a beautiful elephant ear wrap I do not want to replace or remove.

Any help would greatly appreciated PM is fine if it needs to be confidential.

I am using a methyl isocyanate based auto clear coat finish that I have used in the past. I am fully aware of the safety protocols with this product so need to go down that road..

I did a refinish awhile back and the guy didn't wanna mess with original wrap so I spent a lot of time making certain my tape line was perfect on the edge of the wrap, and covered rest with paper. Once that's done work as normal til it comes to sanding. Sanding around those edges are slow but can be done.
