Refinishing Ivory Ferrules

I've replaced the tip onto my ivory ferrule. What abrasives can I use to bring back the gloss onto the ferrule, for 2000 grit wet or dry is too rough for this process?

The finish is accomplished manually, without a lathe.
 
You can use a small amount of pearl drops tooth polish. This should bring it back to a high shine. Just rub it lightly with a soft cloth and a small amount of polish, and it will shine up very nice. Do your best to keep it off the shaft and tip edges.

Then when you finish that, have someone hold it with a towel under it and have just about two inches sticking over the tables edge and take a soft cloth and shin it as if it was your shoes, twisting the cue while polishing with the cloth.

And may I add what I just learned:

1. Sand using the McDermott papers.
2. Then polish per your instructions.
3. Optional: burnish with leather.
 
I do not know about Mc's papers, I do know you should not get it hot by burnishing. Heat will break down the glue and could cause the ivory to crack.

I felt the ferrule becoming warm as I burnished with leather! But alas, I'll learn as time proceeds.
 
I use to know a guy that carried a tube of Teeth whitener in his case. Use to think he was goofy, but that really does work on the Ivory! Not sure if you want to get any on the shaft wood. I don't think that would be good.
 
If you follow my instructions, I think you will be happy with the results. Mine method has been proven over the years.

I am no sure of the whitener in the polish, some guy was using, that pooltablemechanic, mentioned? Not sure of how it would react after many times using it on ivory ferrules. pearl drops, is my chioce. Been using my method for about 15 years or so.

Didn't mean to bother you BLUD! But I guess I should have added..........that it was a TEETH WHITEINING TOOTHPASTE! Guess you can't even realize when I am agreeing with you! With those rose colored glasses you wear!

No harm done. You must have me mixed up with someone else. I have never and do not wear rose colored glasses. I only wear clear "reader" glasses when I work.

I also knew you were agreeing with me. I just don't know anything about that product. Not knowing,I just refered to what I know works.

Kool.........I guess the guy used the toothpaste with teeth whitener because he thought it would work better than regular toothpaste. That was 10 years ago.........nowadays you got 10,000 different ones to choose from. lol! You could even keep the tarter down and freshen up your ferrules at the same time while whitening them lol!
 
Standard toothpaste is less abrasive than whiteners like ULTRA BRITE. But you'all already knew that one!
 
Never claimed to know about toothpaste and the abrasive qualities there coo coo for koko puffs. But thank you for you observation! You got those rose colored glasses too I see.

I used several automotive products to polish ivory ferrules, depending on the state of the ferrule

If there are very fine scratches I use automotive rubbing compound and then car wax

no scratches just the car wax

Deep scratches.. well I use 1000 grit then 1500 sandpaper, then the rubbing compound then the wax...mind you sandpaper will make the ferrule small..at first you wont notice it but using after several times you will notice that the ferrule is smaller

I also hear oil will make it shine too...though never tried it..

Wonder how JB would work? Don't have teeth anymore so know nothing about toothpaste. :D
