Regional Tours Smaller Fields and Purses

To me it looks like a large percentage of the regional tours are getting smaller fields and smaller purses over the last few years. I believe one of the biggest reasons is that dead money players are waking up that they have no choice to cash and are for the most part just donating. I no, you need to play better players if you ever want to get better/good, but there are other ways to do that. At the same time these weekly and monthly winners need to move up if they ever want to get better.

Most of the blame IMO goes to the promoters of these regional tours. There has to be a way to keep track and move up the same winners that should be playing in pro/open events and not clubbing baby seals in amateur events week after week. With the software that is out now, and has been out for years it’s a shame all regional tours don’t use them and share the data with each other tours to move the top cashers up. JT

It's gotta be management problem. The Action Pool Tour in VA/MD is smoking hot now, we had 80 entries last month and about 68 this month. A lot of us are dead money, but we keep coming back. Although we have "C" players supposedly, I doubt the weakest player is lower than a strong B. Lots of A, AA and a couple of AAA players. We've had A players win and often as not the second place player is A, with lots of folks rated a B in the money. A well run event with good venues, calcuttas, break/run competitions and second chance tournies will keep us bangers coming back. Ozzy Reynolds left a couple of months to work for CSI, and his replacement is moving to Las Vegas, too. We'll have to see if the new TD and support staff can keep it going, but all indications are it will continue to rock.

I went to the Action Tour website and it is a very well run tour...one of the best I've seen lately. That looks like the best format for just about any regional tour, as long as they keep the stats updated and move players up when they need to be. JT

Just so everyone knows, I am still running The Action Pool Tour from Las Vegas. I perform all of the administrative functions, make the decisions, and set the course for the tour. My Tournament Director handles the execution of the tournaments themselves.

A lot of it is due to the bar leagues. The players get their competition fix once or twice a week for just a few dollars playing league. Even among playing for a few dollars they don't have an interest in playing any more. Their competitive play is reserved for league play.

For the average player also there is a limit of what they will pay and how far they will travel not to mention the time investment. They have to give up a weekend. Many family guys are not going to do it unless they are one of the players who are sure to cash. In a 32 player field usually at least 24 won't and 4 of the other 8 may not even break even. I know it should not only be about money but that is the reality.
