I have a canadian made Falcon shaft with a 5/16-14 brass insert. What is the best way to remove the brass insert from it without destroying the shaft? Does anyone know what the threads are for the insert going into the shaft? The reason why I want to remove it is so I can use the shaft on a butt with a radial or 3/8-10 pin. Is this possible? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Or just face and bore it
It could be just about any thread on the insert.
It is salvageable to use with a different pin if you wanted to...

Heat isn't really necessary, brass is soft and machines easily.
Don't get me wrong, heat works very efficiently but you run the risk of heating parts that aren't meant to be heated.
Heat is what causes rings to melt, finish to blister and wood to char.
Inserts are cheap and it's not likely you'll be reusing this one.

The outside diameter of the insert being removed is going to be larger than the 3/8x10 pin that you
want to go to so the hole will need to be filled/plugged with wood or phenolic then drilled & tapped.
You want to find a competent CM to perform this task for you. It's not DIY.

Relatively low amounts of heat will affect the glue on the trim rings, causing a problem later... Unless you are changing out the trim as well as the insert, machining is definitely the way to go!
