Removing a Steel Joint...

Obi-Wan Ke9ball

Jedi Knight
I need help. I just acquired an old cue that I'm thinking about playing with. However, I'm not a fan of steel joints and want to remove it. I'd like to remove it myself to avoid paying much more when I have a basic look added. Can anyone help me with this? There's another thing too. The pin is broken too. I'd also like to remove it also. Help with both would be greatly appreciated.

If it's not asking much, could the cue repairmen and cue makers also tell me what they charge to install a new pin and to put just a basic collar like phenolic or your best suggestion. I'm a cost efficient kind of guy.
Thanks
Obi-Wan

I think you're referring to the steel collar. Couldn't you just heat the steel joint with FIRE to re-heat the glue into melting and unscrew? and the same with the pin-remains?

Obi-Wan, Is the pin broke off or is it bent? If it's just bent then take a soldering iron place it on the pin, wait awhile and the glue should break down and release the pin. Unless you have a large soldering iron I think you have to go a different route with the joint collar. I have one of the small butane torches that work very well on both joint collars and pins. This sounds like one of those jobs that are going to be more of a pain that it's worth. Before you invest any money in this cue I would have the pin taken out and spun on a lathe to see if it turns true.

The pin is broken so bad that I have to remove the steel collar to have a chance at getting it out. A soldering iron...I'll have to try that if I can't find my butane torch. how long should I leave the torch going, or the soldering iron?

How close to the joint collar is the pin broken off? I wouldn't try heating it with the butane torch it's close to the joint collar. Probably the only thing that kept the cue in one piece was the steel collar. Heating with the butane torch it a touchy operation, I wouldn't recommend to start off on a cue that you care about. Put the pin in a vise and keep the heat on the extreme end. With your other hand keep constant tension on the cue, when the glue gives you'll know. I wouldn't waste too much time on this cue. If it took a hit bad enough to snap the pin off you might have more internal damage.

It's just above the collar. It's okay though, I wanna remove the collar too. I was thinking the collar should come off first and then the pin. I don't really care too much about the cue. It's more of a pet project than anything. I personally don't like the feel of the steel joint, so I wanna remove it and have something like phenolic in place. An off white phenolic joint, and if someone's daring, to put in a wooden pin.
