I have heard using a sodering (sp??) iron and heating the brass insert will heat the glue and loosen the insert so you can just pull it out. Is it this easy or does anybody know an easier way? Thanks guys!

Possible, I imagine, though I've never done it that way. I would think it easier to install a bolt and and lock it to the insert with a nut and use a propane torch to heat the bolt. In that way you have the bolt to unscrew the insert. I, myself, have always just bored the old insert out and installed a .550 ths. maple plug 1.5" deep in the shaft and drilled and tapped new threads for the new insert.

That is pretty much how I would do it. If you have a screw and nut or insert that match the shaft insert, here is what to do. After heating the shaft insert up with soldiering iron, run the screw in several turns and run the nut or insert down and lock it against the heated insert. Then turn the screw with vise grips and it should back the insert out.

Chris - what size tap would you use? I have all the taps for pins - but a tap for a brass insert would be pretty big wouldnt it? Thanks for the bolt idea - you guys are cutting edge!

most inserts have a 7/16 14 tpi thread. the newer cnc made ones that atlas sells (with the non threaded alignment barrel) use a 7/16 20 tpi.

I use an easy out, heat the head and unscrew it, It sticks out far enough so the heat doesn't tranfer to the collars.
