Repairing Engraved Butt Sleeve

i am looking for suggestions on repairing these butts that have been ingraved. it's not very deep i dont think but shouldnt the color of the wood be the same ? they are just clear coated for protection , right ?
not stained.
thought about sanding it out and recoating it, but will the wood grain show up when i get to this level.i am guessing .005 to .008 deep.
if i have to replace it what are my chances of saving the rings ?

If you sand the finish off those two butts I would guess you might lose your designs. That is the bad thing about decal or engraved cues is that they are very hard to refinish without losing all or at least some of the detail.
 
The rings aren't going anywhere, no matter how much you sand. Depending on how cheap the cues are, the black may be just paint. I can't tell from the pic. If it's paint, stop before you get to that level and start your clear-coat.
 
the 2 cues are hueblers, one is coco bolo, the other is tulip wood i think. i thought the wood would be the same all the way through the sleeve.
 
Ok, then you're in business. You could sand away just the engravings and if you haven't gone through the orig. finish to the wood, you just do a 'spot' finish. If you do go through the finish to the wood then completely strip the finish from the butt-sleeve and re-finish. This assures that the wood will be a uniform color when done. If you're good, you might not need to remove the wrap. But given the minimal time and expense of a re-wrap I'd probably just remove it and do the job right.
 
you mean refinish with clear , not with any kind of stain / right ?
because the wood looks white where it is engraved
