Replacing a tip with a fibre pad

I was getting ready to change the tip on my Schon, and (embarrassingly) noticed for the first time that it has a black fibre pad. Now what? Should I try to leave the pad on and put a new tip on over the old pad? Replace the pad? Or, just install a new tip directly on the ferrule. Does it "need" a pad?

Thanks,
Alan

If it's an ivory ferrule I would definately keep the pad but not if it's less than .010. If it's not ivory and you liked the hit it had, keep the pad. If you want a stiffer hit remove the pad. It's strictly personal choice. Confusing, isn't it.

I generally only use pads on ivory ferrules, unless requested by the customer. If the cue has a pad on it, it's on good & tight, & you're happy with the hit, I'd say leave it and just glue the new tip on the old pad. If you want to experiment with the hit a little, here's your chance to try it without the pad.

Michael and Sherm,
Thanks for your responses. The ferrule is not ivory, so I suppose it does not "need" the pad. I salvaged the pad anyway and put a layered tip on top of it. It looks sharp, but I'll try it out this afternoon. I figure I can always remove the pad if I don't like the 'new' hit.

Thanks again,
Alan
