I was wondering if anyone out there has replaced a rack on a Hightower deluxe lathe. Mine is starting to get very loose. How much do you think it would cost. Any kind of upgrade out there?

I have them in stock. Just email me or call.

I like the upgraded rack and pinion Chris offers. If you do not have that then get it. If your rack is just loose, adjust the pinion. It rides in an adjustable tube that is eccentric.

Jim.

I do not have , but I do have money i was just owed , was wondering what to buy , wood, machinery , but this sounds good , what are advantages? smooth travel?

How does the pinnion adjust. Mine appears to be perfectly cylindrical

The little tube/sleeve the pinion gear slips through is called an eccentric. The hole is drilled off center allowing you to rotate it to adjust how deep the pinion gear teeth are in the gear rack teeth. There is a set screw and nut on the side of the carriage that needs loosened to adjust it. Once it is adjusted tighten the set screw down and test it. Once it is right then lock the jam nut down so it won't vibrate loose. It is usually adjusted with the thin side between 9 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Never put the thin side to the right at 3 o'clock or it could dent the eccentric. You want to have just a little play in the handwheel and make sure the handwheel pinion will slip out of the holes easily everywhere along the bed. If it will not come out in some places you have it adjusted too deep into the rear rack teeth. Also you want the teeth to almost reach the back of the rack teeth, but not go back beyond the rack or it could jam.

That worked! Thanks again Chris my lathe feels as good as when i got it again Thanks again JIMM
