i am a member of a "TAP" league. what exactly are the responsibilities of the league captain? i joined a league almost a year ago and am still learning the nuances. what is a "buy-in"? any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about TAP-specific responsibilities, but for my APA teams, I need to make sure that everyone knows where we're playing next. (Traveling league.) And that if they aren't gonna make it or will be late, that we know that, as well.

Gotta get the paperwork (and money) back to the League Office on time, filled out properly. Making sure that the League Office has all the appropriate information for each player, as well. Registering for the next session on time, as well. (Doing that this week, as a matter of fact.)

Making sure that everyone on the team plays enough matches to qualify for end-of-session playoffs, and other tournaments.

Running the match, working out whatever needs to be done with the other team captain (who puts up first, which tables to be used, any league/territory specific rules clarified...), making sure that we don't go over our skill-level limit (APA specific issue), starting a second table at the appropriate time, getting the other captains signature at the end of the night, yada yada yada.

Being on the lookout for potential openings on the team, and how to replace those people if necessary.

The biggest responsibility for me, is to make sure that everyone is involved and is having a good time. We certainly take it seriously enough, but it should be fun, too. Fortunately for me, both teams that I play on have such a good bunch of people that we can do both, have fun and seriously compete.

Most leagues don't pay much attention to this.

In leagues that I've run, the team captain is responsible for:

Filling out a roster and any other sheets needed to start your league.

Carrying enough players on the roster to avoid forfeits and postponements when possible.

Informing players who will be in the lineup the coming week.

Making sure that team members have copies of the rules, schedule, etc. (Which should be furnished by League Director).

Attending all meetings of team captains.

Having your score sheet roster filled out before scheduled starting time.

Filling out score sheet completely, double checking against opposing teams score sheet, signing, and returning to LD.

Collecting all membership fees and weekly fees, and giving them to the league director promptly after each match starts.

Have an understanding among team mates regarding who can call time-outs, coach, etc.

Have mutual and agreed on goals for the team.

Notifying LD and opposing team captain 24 hours ahead of any scheduled match that you need to postpone.

Having players ready and waiting when their game or match is up.

....and all this is in the official league by-laws which are given to every team captain along with the playing rules, schedule, projected cash pay-out, and contact info for LD, all captains and league association.
