OK. The cat is out of the bag. We went over 32 players. We had 42 players make their way to Waco for the $30 entry monthly tournament at Clicks Billiards. There were players from all over the state…...Dallas,Denton,Mckinney,Wichita Falls,Houston,Austin,San Antonio and of course Waco. This created an interesting dilemma for everyone at the auction. No one knew very many people, creating an atmosphere of caution.
The top picks for this months event were Crispian NG, Gary Vanover,John Rollins,Charlie Rikard and Benny Scott. Of these, only 2 would finish in the money.
Our 5-6th finishers were Charlie Rikard (a regular top pick) and local “young gun” Jonathan Neuman, who’s game is really maturing. “Good job” to our local guys!
Finishing 4th was Shonn Ballew from Houston. Shonn is one hell of a shot and always fun to be around. Great Job Shonn!
Third place went to Mark Church, a very solid player who looked like he was going all the way from the very beginning. Nice work Mark!
Jeff Georges, from the McKinney area, started out strong by defeating a very strong “old school” player Newell Bullard 7-3, Royce Bunnell of OB1-Cues 7-4, TJ Carew 7-1 and then top pick Charlie Rikard 7-4 for a chance to play for the “Hot Seat”.
Coming in strong AND solid was another top pick Gary Vanover, yes the son of Texas pool legend Bob Vanover. Gary started out by defeating Austin "straight shooter" Steve Kilgore 7-5, Roddy Chim of DFW area 7-1, Mark Church 7-4, then Shonn Ballew of Houston 7-5 for an exciting “Hot Seat” match with Jeff Georges.
Everyone watching was saying, “It’s Georges” ,and that is exactly how it went in the “Hot Seat” match as Jeff would defeat Gary Vanover 7-3. Gary was not easily discouraged though as he went over to the one loss side to defeat Mark Church 5-2 for another shot at Jeff Georges in the race to nine finals. Both players were tired and playing loose at the start, but the one who kicked it up a notch and closed it out was Gary Vanover 9-3. Great Playing to Jeff Georges, whom I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of, and congratulations to Gary Vanover our new Champion.
