Retapering a House Cue

I posted this message in a thread about bar cues. But didn't get quite as much response as I expected so I thought I would I post this here....

About a month ago, Joey Gold took a couple of shots with a Valley house cue, and told me that if he were to retaper the cue and shaft, that there is no cue at any price, say $10,000 or $20,000 that would play better.

I wonder if there is a cuemaker out there who could put a SW or a Cog taper (Or a taper from any of the upper echelon makers you preferred) on a good house cue if you took it to them?

Also, how much do you think a cuemaker would charge to do this if you supplied the house cue? Providing you could get a cuemaker to actually do it and the house cue was of a quality that met their standards...

I bet if you had that done and replaced the tip & ferrule with what you preferred the hit would be pretty hard to beat...

Please post your opinions (especially cuemakers) on this subject as I would really like to hear them. I personally would be interested in trying something like this if it's possible...

The older house cues were quite large and there was enough material for the cuemaker to retaper them into a good cue. The new house cues of today are made so small in diameter to save money on stock that there is really not much that can be done with them. Not only that they are usually warped quite a bit.

What you ask can certainly be done but in the end, is it worth it? When all is said & done, you've still got a 1 pc. cue. Rather cumbersome to tote around with you. If you're going to leave it in one location, OK. IMO, a 'sneaky', built to your specs would be a little more practical and probably around the same money.

Granted, a one pc. house cue is the 'standard' by which a cue is evaluated regarding 'hit' but this can be closely mimic-ed with proper joint construction.

Today's house cues are a little more user friendly, with regards to handle diameter and most of the better ones already have a version of a pro taper. You might just need to seek out the one that suits you. I've always liked Dufferins and have built many sneakies from them. Lucasi makes a one pc. house cue that starts as two pcs. The threaded rod that permanently joins the pcs. at the joint is sufficient to give the cue it's forward weighting. They seem to play pretty well.

Although I respect Joe I don't believe a word of it. If I thought house cues played that great I never would have purchased my first custom cue nor would have started building them. Now a-days nostalgic has kicked in with many players and everyone seems to be looking for full spliced cues as if that was the holy grail of cue sticks. Everyone has their own perception of a good hit and I, personally like a two-piece, forward weighted cue's play much better than a butt heavy house cue irregardless of it's shaft taper.

My current player is a SW so I was interested in having a house cue tapered to the same specifications as my cue. Just as an experiment to see if the hit would be better, the same, or worse. To prove or debunk the myth as it were.

I think you guys talked me out of it. I agree that it is a probably a wast of time, effort and money.

I agree with Dick, but t answer your question, any cuemaker with a pole sander can re-taper a house cue pretty easily.

I think his shop is up and running; haven't been over yet to see it.

I really don't think he'll mind you calling, especially if he gets some work out of it!
