Returning Player needs Cue Advice

Hello everyone,

I am 34 years old from Southwest Pennsylvania. A little history on me: I started playing pool when I was about 15 with a cheap Kmart cue. My cousin had a table and I would play when I had a chance. That is when I fell in love with playing. Fast forward to 2000 and I spent 3 months at school near Memphis. I started going after school to a joint called Bartlett Billiards every day after school. It was awesome! At that time I had more money and splurged on a Schon STL2 cue. I loved it!

When I left school and came home I played one time at a local joint with a bar table. After that I never played again until now. In my area there aren't any real pool halls ( unless i travel 40 miles one way into Pittsburgh) and few bars have tables.

I sold the Schon a few years ago and I still regret it though looking back my taste in cues has changed. I am hoping to get a table soon but have been playing at a few bars that finally got tables (not 9 footers:frown:)

My budget is lower now, under 200. I love the looks of a classic sneaky pete cue with wood to wood joint and no wrap. I don't have any local shops to try cues( unless I go to Pittsburgh) so it is hard to try them out.

I have been looking online at Schmelke cues as they seem to be a good deal, how is the build quality, fit and finish?

I need advice on makes, models, joint type, tip size, weight...etc

I can't wait to start playing steady and I need a decent cue to start with.

Thanks in advance for any advice you all could offer.

The Schmelke is a good cue for the price range. It is straight and they offer a good warranty. I would suggest to you to look at Viking Cues as well. In that price range they are a top of the line American Made cue. Webbs Billiards is a frequent poster here on AZ.

If you contact him I am sure he will be willing to help you out.

Good Luck and again Welcome Back to the Game.....

You may want to consider a Pechauer JP USA model. The are about $200 on ebay. It is not a sneaky pete, but it is a plain looking cue. They have a good hit and are guaranteed for life to be straight if purchased from an authorized dealer. Thanks & good luck.

thanks for the replies. i do like that JP USA cue. Who makes some decent custom sneakys that i could maybe find used?

I believe the Axiom cues are imported by David Miller the son of the guy that imported the Cobra cues. The family knew Mizerak and had a deal with him at one time for his cues. Another guy (possibly a cousin) imported the Slyfoxx cues. He still in fact has a few leftover Slyfoxx cues that he lists on Ebay. They are "Taiwan" cues.

I have no idea. I just know I read it somewhere.

I would like to stay with a Made in the USA cue if possible.
I appreciate to help though.

Thanks

Joss purple heart wood sneaky pete...brand new. You can probably get one for $170, includes shipping. 13mm shaft and around 19 ounce.

I agree.. If your going with USA made and under $200 a JOSS sneaky pete is your best option. I have owned 3 different sneaky models from JOSS over the years and all were top notch players for cues under $200.

That is untrue, but it's not the first time I have heard it. I have spoken to people involved with those companies, family members. They have no factory, they are importers.

Heck, there are some people that say JOSS cues are made in China.

didnt they have one line that was produced in China or another country? that series had a different joint/pin and quality was uncomparable to the other joss cues.

All I can tell you is the Joss cues I have owned all had 5/16x14 piloted joints and they all had a nice solid hit, the shafts had nice consistent flex, and they stayed straight.. That's more than I can say for a lot of other cues I have had.

Thanks for all the replies. I am still interested in other opinions on USA made sneaky petes or plain looking cues.

If I could go back in time I would have bought the Schon STL1 instead of the STL2 and not sold it like an idiot:rolleyes:

I also realized that I don't have a room big enough for a pool table so that is out:mad:

I looked pretty hard at the Players HXT cues but I really want a USA cue.

Thanks again for the help, keep it coming:thumbup:

Where exactly in SW Penna are you?I'm at the northwest edge of Fayette County.

For American made cues, try usacues.com they're dedicated to American made cues.

Ah, in Bull skin/Salt Lick townships? Damn, can't imagine much to do out there. There are plenty of leagues in Fayette, though; from APA to bar leagues.

Joss sneaky is a great option. If you can find an older one from the 90's, they really play good, IMO. It was my daily player for about 10 years. Paid for itself dozens and dozens of times.

Try the Jacoby line, with Standard or Edge shaft

I got Jimmy the kid his deal with daivd Jacoby. Jimmy uses a Docs jump cue. I had David fix some a joints in old schons, they hit unbelivable, and it is immpossible to tell they were repaired and remade! Use my name and get a Jacoby with a Hybrid Shaft! mark There are jimmy Wetch models available by Koinnkid/ mark
