I have a shaft or two that I wont use (warped or just not good quality) and I wouldnt mind a replacement shaft that matches including the rings. Whats involved in cutting out the shaft collar/rings from the unwanted shaft and using them on a replacement shaft?
Thanks
The rings would not be easy to match from scratch

The way I have done it with good success is to use a boaring bar to remove the insert and tennon the ring is glued onto. Bore it out till the wood is all gone then you can snap the ring off.

Put the shaft in your lathe as far in as you can, and still able to get your parting tool just behind the trim.
Dial indicate the joint and get it to spin true.
Bore out the shaft until there is a very thin layer left. (.600 or so)
Very carefully part it off right at the joint between the shaft and trim.
Cut your new shaft to size, then dial indicate, cut a .601 or so tenon, and install the old trim.
Sometimes you can even keep the old finish on there, and just add a bit above it. Sometimes you need to strip the old finish. Either way, if you are careful, and your joint pins are true, they will fit as well as they did when new.
