Reversed psychology or sharking?

I was offered to play a small set with this guy that I never played before. All I knew about him that he always plays 9 ball and that is his best game.
As for me, I'm not much of a 9 ball player and prefer playing 8 ball and seem to do better at it.
The first set he demolished me 7-2, and I could tell that he's a better player than I. So ...when he offered me to play again, I showed some hesitation.
Then he offered me a spot- a wild 8 ball. I agreed and this time I was doing better, we played two sets , which I lost both times on the hill.
I didn't want to play anymore, so he started talking about giving me even bigger spot. He mentioned something about games on the wire or whatever the case may be...
He went to smoke and I told him that I would think about it.
When he came back and asked me what I decided, I said to him:
-You know what, we're playing cheap anyways, I like the pressure. If you still want to play, I will play you even, without the spot.
I could see in his eyes that he couldn't believe what I was saying, obviously he was surprised.
I didn't have to say much more, we flipped and started playing again.
I beat him 3 times, 7-5,7-2 and 7-0.
All I can say that not much changed about my game, with the exception of playing smarter and a bit slower, but something happened to his playing, especially during the last set. He started to miss a lot more and kept scratching and hooking himself.
Did I shark him by surprisingly offering him to play even?
Because, all in all, I could tell that he's at least a couple levels better player than I.

Great turnaround. Hard to say why you won, maybe he let you win to draw you in. Maybe you play better 9b than you think you do...or something in the middle of them two.

Either way, it always feels good to step up and whup som ass!

Sharking usually has negative connotations. Definitely some reverse psychology, but nothing unsportsmanlike. Showed some heart, good job.

I don't think that he let me win, because right after we were done, he paid me and split. And his original plan was to keep gambling all night. I was the one who didn't want to gamble in the first place, he literally talked me into it.Also I could tell how irritated he was, started to slam his stick and stuff any time I was winning a rack.

he probably wasnt as good as you think and random breaks in the game determined the outcomes.

The balls roll funny for everyone but

Years ago I played a really good player a race to 5. I missed a ball and 4 racks later I decided he wasn't going to have anymore decent shots.

I won the race and that is what happened to you. Something clicked and it scared him.
