That's the way it looks-From the AZB homepage:

'Meanwhile, according to report of INQUIRER'S renowned and respected columnist Manolo Inigo, Manalo will carrying the Philippine Flag in the upcoming 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games slated on November 27 to December 5, 2005.

He will join reigning US Open 9-ball ruler Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Gandy "Sapsal" Valle, Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat, Ronnie "Calamba" Alcano, Lee Van Corteza, Antonio "Ga-Ga" Gabica, and Antonio "Nickoy" Lining and/or Warren "Warrior" Kiamco, the other half of the defending 9-ball doubles champion tandem with Corteza.'

If accurate Bad news for the IPT-Good news for a few "alternates".

After reading some posts on the Matchroom forum, it seems that Marlon hasn't made his mind up about which event to play in.
But it's hard to turn down a guaranteed $10,000 just for turning up to the first IPT tournament.

Well what about the rest of them?

Is the IPT 'King of the Hill' paying all spots??

According to what I read on the matchroom forum.
Johnny Archer told Manalo that last place is worth $10,000.

I don't know what Reyes and Bustamante are doing, but I know where i'd be.

Oh man, I would play in the games, gee wiz there is shot Billiards "could" be in the 2008 Olympics, who would want to miss the slim chance of that? Wow what that could do for a pool player, I'm sure as soon as pool is in the olympics the popularity will just skyrocket and tons of opportunities will pop up like crazy  I'm sure Wheaties would jump at the chance to put a pool player on the box

Hey in all honesty pool may be different in the Philippines, and maybe this would do something for them, but here in the US pool as an olympic sport would do jack squat for pool or a pool player.

For these guys it could mean a lot more than just $10,000....these guys are certainly looking at placing in the $20,000 or great range and I feel Reyes will make the $200,000.

The guys should forget the games, give some young kid the opportunity to represent their country in the games! I'm sure there fellow countryman would totally understand them making the choice to play for $200,000 as apposed to a gold medal.

I will be pretty shocked if they pass on the IPT for the Asian Games instead. As said, the money for getting LAST is as good as many high end events pay off for getting 1st. And any one of these guys has a chance to make 200,000 and play against the best players in the world in a premier event featuring not only the top pool players in the world but also Ronnie O. They would be fools to miss what might just be a historic event in pool's possibly very bright future. The person who wins the first IPT event ever may in time be like the guy who won the first golf masters ever and have his name permanently etched in the record books.

Question about IPT payout.

Does anyone have any idea if the OPEN events pay out all spots?
Do you have to win any matches, or are you guaranteed prize money if you play.

In other words, can some alternate cough up the entry fee of $1000???, and make 10 times his/her money just for showing up?

Or will the invitational payout, be different then the regular tournament payouts?
If so, what will the payout structure be?

Skipping the games and the chance to represent their country in international competition could be looked at very negatively by all Filipinos.

Obviously pool is taken seriously there; the citizens want to see their best foot put forward. I'm sure the winning country of this SE Asian tournament has bragging rights all year, not to mention a great deal of pride.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them bow out of the IPT event because of this. Missing the games could demonstrate greed, selfishness or even betrayal in the eyes of their compatriots.

JMO.

I think that Reyes, Bustamante and Manalo deserves the chance to play in the IPT cause they have represented the Philippines alot of times already instead of playing in other big tournaments. It's about time that they get the chance to win alot of cash.

Reyes has won more cash than anyone in tournament play. According to AZ he has won almost $70k this year (and $650k from '00 to '04!) and Busta around $25k (with $380k from '00 to '04). Add to that all their sponsorships (whether it be cash-in-hand or traveling expenses) and gambling wins and they're obviously sitting pretty.

Although I will grant you that their '05 earnings are no where near the IPT prize funds.

Time will tell what they decide to do. They're handing over the Gold Medal to Taiwan if they play in Orlando.

I think Manalo will play in Orlando and the rest will stay in Phillipines. I get this feeling from what i have read about Manalo. I dont think he is that 'in' with the Phillipine pool community and may have less pressure to play in the Asian Games.

It would be stupid to skip the IPT. To clarify, it's not even Asian Games we are talking about... it's South East Asian Games... meaning competition between; Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Laos... maybe a couple more and that's about it. And I believe Taiwan is not part of South East Asia... so pitting Reyes, Busta et al... against players from SE countries does not make sense when these stars can earn "millions of pesos",.. the Philippines will still be SE powerhouse by fielding the second stringers like Ronnie Alcano, Andam, Lining, Gandy Valle and the likes... if this is Asian Games then it might make more sense... i doubt if they decide to play the SEA Games..

Reyes will play, did you see the payouts! HOF's are guaranteed $30,000! WOW, KT's got a soft spot for the HOF's.....

So how in the world would Reyes miss a chance at $200,000 and a guaranteed $30,000
