Does Richard Black make his own points/splices/blanks?

I've heard some people rave over his work, and others question it. I posed a similar question in another thread, but thought this particular question might go well in here as well (for those that mainly hang out in this area).

Thanks,
Matt

Maybe the ones who question his work are jealous? Have you inspected his work in person or hit with his cues? What did you think?

Glass houses asking cuemakers this question in my opinion. Call Richard and ask him.

Why don't you ask Richard?

I don't know what kind of "well rounded" answer I would get if I asked him directly how his work is. I'm asking people who have played with his cues and know something about cuemaking. I'm by no means badmouthing him. I in fact want one of his cues.

If you ask the same question to enough people you are bound to get the answer you want.

If you like his work then buy one of his cues. If you don't then don't but do not pay any attention to what anyone else says. All cuemakers have happy customers and customers that cannot be pleased regardless of how hard you try. Sometimes there is just poor communication between both parties.

Good luck in your quest,

Matt:

I have owned 4 RB's ranging from $1200 to over $5k. The craftsmanship and hit on each was consistent with what you would expect from a guy with his reputation. The cues looked and felt very custom-made and hit with so much feel it is hard to describe.

You can call Richard and visit with him if you would like to order a new cue and he will make it just how you want it. I did that twice and really enjoyed the whole process. It is much more satisfying than buying a used cue.

Don't be so hesitant, he is a great cuemaker! You will not be unhappy! In fact, I bet he will deliver more than you expect.

The ask him directly part was regarding whether he makes his own points/splices/blanks.

No Sir, I did not think you were necessarily bad mouthing him, but I don't know what kind of "well rounded" answer you will get from the cuemakers in this forum either. The subject of making one's own blanks can be a touchy subject for some. Correct or not, there is a perception by some that if someone does NOT make their own blanks then they are not able to and hence don't do good quality work. The answers you would likely get here are only "yes I think he does" or "ask him". Cue makers don't generally jump on chances to critique the quality of others work, particularly someone like Richard Black and in a public forum.

If you had a question about if they hit stiff, forward balanced, if he normally has a stiff taper or not so stiff for his standard shafts, if they are regarded as player cues as well as beautiufl art...things like that, those who had experience might be able to help you decide if you thought his cues would fit you as a player. But asking a cuemaker to give an opinion of the quality of his work (which is what it sounded like to me) and whether he makes his own blanks is in my opinion something else.

Maybe I am mistaken about my perspective, I am not a cuemaker, just my opinion.

Kelly
