Does anyone know where to get the "old style" marbelized looking ring material? I've seen various colors on old cues, but haven't come across the actual ring material.

Here is an example in white:

Anyone know of other resources for the rings? The Shmelke website is like navigating through the IRS code, and the accent ring section doesn't have any listed.

I've heard it called Pearlite (like in gun grips) but I haven't had any luck locating a mfg. or dealer who sells it.

Try Atlas

http://www.cuestik.com/cuestik/catalog.cfm?dest=dir&linkon=subsection&linkid=503&secid=221.

If you only need a small piece. I think I have some of the pearl that's in the picture that you posted. I might even have some blue and green also.Let me know what you need and I'll see what I've got..

You have to be careful working with it, it can be somewhat translucent in spots. You have to keep it thick enough so this doesn't happen. I made a shaft for a guy with a Hubler that had that kind of joint and had to re do the rings, you could see the wood through the ring. The next ones I did worked out better, I painted the wood under the ring white and it did not look bad at all. This was stuff I got from Atlas and I got it just to do this guys cue but I would never use it for anything else. It looks cheap and crappie at best.

Both Atlas and Schmelke carry the stuff although they are of different textures. The stuff comes in white, black, ivory, silver, gold, red, blue, green and maybe brown. It comes in solid rods that I believe are 1.5" in diameter and around a foot long. I have purchased from both places but Schmelke is the lowest in price. For doing repairs on Vikings, use the material from Schmelke as it's a much closer match. If it's for your cue building then it doesn't make much difference.

Thanks for all the help guys! With all of your suggestions I realized that the perfect keyword for searching is "pearlescent." I found one mfg (EPCO) and noted that Prather (in addition to Altas and schmelke) also sells the stuff!

I don't think it is the same stuff that is seen on gun grips. The stuff you get from Atlas is some kind of polyester and would chip and break pretty easy if it was made into a gun grip.

I am not a cue maker but call viking or smelkie they both use the material in there cues it pretty cheap to.

an idea.

Buy pearlescent and mix it in a 2 part epoxy or polyester resin yourself. Then you can make it exactly to the density you wish.
