when turnning down ring work this consist of a metal ring in the middle (Aluminum, brass, nickle) with plastic rings on eather side, what do you guys do to keep the metal from bleeding into the palstic. My metal ring always comes out about twice the size.

Sharpen your tooling and probably lower the tool a couple of thousandths. If your tool is even .001 to high it won't cut clean.

Your laying over a big ole honkin' burr from the metal ring, do like Dick said or use live tooling.

Something else to try is to undercut the metal ring slightly . Run the tip of your cutter into the ring to take it down slightly lower than the rings beside it . It takes a little practice and will help with the finish . I second what Dick said also .

I use phenolic rings on each side of metal rings instead of plastic which means you have your metal rings sandwiched in between black phenolic. All other
suggestion also apply, especially sharp tooling.

My suggestions consist of a little bit of what everyone has said. I prefer to wrap them in phenolic, Sharp tooling is a must, I also undercut them as mentioned, but sometimes follow up with a needle file also. The phenolic on the sides makes everything a little bit easier IMO.
