RIP Bill Russell!

What a great player and human being.

Success at every level- college, Olympics, NBA, and as a coach and broadcaster.

He also campaigned for Civil Rights.

Interesting clip about him from a great series on the History Channel that aired in the '90s accompanying David Halbertsam's book about the 1950s. The segment about Russell starts at the 31:52 mark.

Think about it, from his Junior year in college til he retired, he played in the Finals every year but one! And he won every year but two! 2 NCAA titles, Olympics and 11 out of 13 NBA Titles. You could argue it would have been 12 out of 13 because he was injured in finals when the Celts lost to the Hawks. Only Wilt's 1967 Sixers team beat him and the Celts and that was 7 games. His laugh was a thing of beauty and completely infectious. He and Ted Williams both mellowed and aged to perfection.

He was also the first black coach in the NBA with the Celtics. I always though it was funny that people think of Boston as racist yet a lot of firsts or very early break-throughs for black sports players happened in Boston.
