Rotary tool in tool post

I use a Mid America lathe and do not have CNC. I would like to be able to drill holes and cut channels using the lathes indexing. Seams overkill and a pain to use the big router. I would like to use a smaller router or maybe a dremel mounted in the tool post.

I am pretty sure I have seen this somewhere in a video. Or something like what I am thinking. Is anyone doing this or have any suggestions.

Dremel tools aren't particularly accurate or strong. Makita has a palm router that's pretty compact, DeWalt and Milwaukee has their own variants. Personally I use a Kress/AMB FME1050P, the big advantage, other than the accuracy is that it uses standard ER16 collets

Do they make a holder for it or do you have to make something

It has many uses.

I made one out of a piece of heavy angle iron.
IIRC, the thread is oddball. Seems it was 13P? but the dia is much larger than 1/2".
Single pointed it on the lathe so don't recall accurately.

A little bit more about it here: https://forums.azbilliards.com/threads/another-glue-q-od-threads.510825/#post-6631057

As others note, dremel works, it solved a problem for me. But if i was going to build a set up for engraving and inlay, there are more solid routers or die-grinders out there.

I use a small makita router, the 18v battery version and it works great. You can buy the cnc router brackets on Amazon for cheap and adapt it to your tool post.

Michael, I ended up getting a router and a Deco mount for this. I also got a mount like you showed for other things but mostly to cut off rings. Works great except the mandrel for the saw blade has some runout. The first one was unusable so I sent it back and ordered another. A little better but far from straight. It works but the wobble of the blade increases the waste and makes it hard to be as accurate as I want. It seems like the ones I found online are all the same crap, just sold by different people. Are there good ones available or are they all the same?

I don't know. I didn't have any luck with the blade. I use a parting tool for cutting rings.

Ok thanks. I liked the dremel because it made a cleaner cut. Maybe my parting tool needs to be sharpened.
Definitely needs to happen often when using the PT method. More often when cutting things other than woods.
Not for everyone but I have parting tools custom ground for this particular operation.
It's not an inexpensive option but when you figure the out longevity of each insert it ways itself out in the end.
