I just saw this article on Filipina Rubilen Amit on the AZBilliards main page.

I've been hearing and reading great things about Rubilen, but I've never seen her play. Does anyone know how she would stack up to the greats of the WPBA, such as Fisher, Corr, and Kim. Also, what's holding her back from participating in any of the WPBA events? Any of the forum members from the Philippines care to share some info? Thanks.

Tough to say how she compares to the likes of Fisher and Corr. I know she's been competing against men at the pro level for a few years now. I believe she played in the Tokyo 9 ball event in 2002.

In the qualifying event for that tournament, she beat some 3rd string Pinoy players. The biggest name she took down (definitely not 3rd string) was Lee Van Corteza.

From what I heard, opinions about her from her 2002 stint in the Tokyo 9 ball were very favorable. She was already being compared to Fisher and Corr, particularly in terms of cue ball control as early as then.

I haven't seen her play since then though, with the exception of some highlights on TV. She did stop playing for a while, at least competitively. She obviously did well in the South East Asian games, but I'm not really sure how well she's currently playing, and how she would really compare to the greats in women's pool.

AFTER taking the Southeast Asian Games by storm, Rubilen “Bingkay” Amit is now looking to conquer the world.

The 24-year-old accounting graduate from the University of Santo Tomas is now sharpening her skills for the ultimate test in pool -- the World Pool Championship.

“Kaya ring gawin ng mga Pinay ang kayang gawin ng mga Pinoy (We can also do what our male players can),” said Amit, noting the world championship romps of Efren “Bata” Reyes and Alex Pagulayan.

The women’s version of the WPC will be held this March in Taiwan. Waiting for her there are the likes of world-renowned lady pool sharks Karen Corr and Alison Fisher.

Her good friend and fellow national player Iris Rañola had been there before, but she didn’t last long.

Amit is unperturbed. “Pare-pareho lang naman kaming kayang umubos ng bola (All of us can clear the table),” she said.

It may sound cocky, but she’s got the game to back it up.

The pretty Cebuana stamped her name in local
pool history when she went undefeated in the qualifying round of this year’s Philippine 9-Ball Open to become the first and only female player to make the cut in the main draw of any national open for men.

Amit is also untouchable by her peers in the region, sweeping her way to the gold medal in both the 8-ball and 9-ball singles of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games.

She capped her dominating show with an 11-0 thrashing of Malaysian Suhana Dewi B Sabtu in the titular match of 9-ball.

Amit credited her current form to the training program facilitated by billiards godfather Aristeo “Putch” Puyat.

“Our game improved and we developed confidence further when Sir Putch allowed us to play against our world-class male players,” she said in Filipino.”

The bigwigs are also taking notes.

The former Asian 8-ball queen can run out, clean up and play safe. She can hole in a bank, carom, combination and even jump shot.

“She’s fundamentally sound and she has the patience needed for the game,” said Boyet Asonto, Amit’s longtime mentor. Marlon Bernardino, contributor
