Rule Question: 9-Ball

Tournament Director announces at the players' meeting that the 9-ball does not count if it is made on the break in the bottom two corner pockets. It should be spotted and the breaker continues to shoot.

During a match a player forgets this rule and begins sending balls down to be racked because he/she forgot.

He only disturbed two or three balls and did not disrupt the entire rack.

Did he lose the game?
Or can the breaker remind him/her that the 9-ball in the bottom two pockets does not count and therefore the game is not over?

This happened to me whereby I was playing in a short race to 5. I broke and the 9-ball trickled into the bottom corner. My opponent reached out with his stick and began sending balls down to be racked (it was a rack-your-own) tournament.

Me and a spectator reminded him the game was not over and he promptly tried to re-spot the balls he disturbed to continue the game.

Was I within my right to explain he lost the game anyway because he disrupted the rack? I felt awkward doing this because it was a friendly little tourney and I did not want to be such a stickler for the rules, especially in such a short race.

Officially in this situation after you tell him his error you would get ball in hand from whatever state the table and the balls are in.

He cannot insist on a rerack even if its a friendly game. If I were the one who made that mistake I would just forfeit the game.

But then again if you guys are buddies it would be reasonable to replay the game especially if the rule was new.But he has no right to insist on it.
