Rule Question. No Rails

If I play a firm stop shot (cue ball and no other balls touch a rail) and I pocket the object ball clean, without hitting a pocket facing or rail and then the ball pops back out of the pocket and lands back on the table in front of the hole, is this a foul shot? No rails and no ball pocketed?

Any views?

Thanks

Stephen

If this ever happens it should count as loss of game because you must have really done something bad to piss off the pool gods :p

no it is not the back of the pocket is an extension of the rail by rule.

This is correct. See sections 6 and 8 of the WPA rules, especially bold clauses below:

6.3 No Rail after Contact
If no ball is pocketed on a shot, the cue ball must contact an object ball, and after that contact at least one ball (cue ball or any object ball) must be driven to a rail, or the shot is a foul. (See 8.4 Driven to a Rail.)

8.4 Driven to a Rail
A ball is said to be driven to a rail if it is not touching that rail and then touches that rail. A ball touching at the start of a shot (said to be “frozen” to the rail) is not considered driven to that rail unless it leaves the rail and returns. A ball that is pocketed or driven off the table is also considered to have been driven to a rail. A ball is assumed not to be frozen to any rail unless it is declared frozen by the referee, the shooter, or the opponent. See also Regulation 27, Calling Frozen Balls.

8.1 Parts of the Table
The following definitions of parts of the table refer to the accompanying diagram....

The table is comprised of rails, cushions, a playing surface and pockets....

The cushions, tops of the rails, pockets and pocket liners are parts of the rails.

No it is not a foul. Just a lose of turn. Your opponent shoots from where the cue ball is.

Thanks for the speedy responses, it was just a scenario that entered my head the other night and needed an answer!

Thanks again

One of the crazier shots I had the unpleasant fortune of shooting was a ball into a side pocket, it proceeded to pop back out, bounce on the table once, and land in the other side pocket. Some tables just like popping balls out of the pocket when hit just right.

Also for that video above, he catches the point of the pocket, so its a legal shot regardless.

I was playing a little 9 ball bar table tournament a few years back. Got to the final match and was down. Fought back from being down a few games to hill - hill. Got a chance at the table and had a pretty tough run out. Made it to the 9 ball, perfect shape, straight in the corner, little two foot shot. Hit it really hard to put an exclamation point on the nice run out I had just made. The 9 ball split the pocket, disappeared and then flew back up from the bottom of the pocket to land straight in front of the other corner for my opponent.

Cost me about $60 if I remember correctly. Lesson learned!!!!!

What about this shot? This happened to me a couple years back and I took a picture of it.

Free beer!

That's a free beer maybe a six pack. I don't care what the rules say, if you made a ball it's still your shot! From there! If it's my shot I shoot from there. Gotta have fun!

Official rules consider the ball as leaving the playing surface so it should have been a scratch. Since I made a ball on the break my friend let me continue shooting. I did hit my next shot shooting it off the top of the rail

For the ball to rest there surely its touching wood, and if so its a foul? My eyesight not the greatest so dont shoot me :)

I don't think it was. We all took a look at it and agreed it was balanced on the felt. The table is a really old valley (it has a counter with 100k+ games played on it). When the cue ball landed on the rail it was spinning in place fast. My guess is the spin somehow created a indentation on the felt/rubber
