Run Racks & Then Cant Run Three Balls

another bad night, but i am going to stay focused. got started off bad, on the first break i made three balls and was completed snookered from the 3-Ball. i said outloud "Here we go again!" but then i said "No, wait, thats just the first rack, lets move on!"

i had 3-4 pretty good chances, only managed to run out once. the diagram below is what irks me. i had made the 1-Ball, and i decided just a little bit of low right to come off the bottom rail near Point A and out for the 3-Ball around Point B. about a half tip of low and a half tip of right. not sure what happened, but i guess i hit it too easy and i scratched in the side pocket.

how should i have played this shot? or was it that i just wasnt aggressive enough and my timid approach caused me to shoot too easy and ended up scratching?

CueTable Help

Why not play the 2 with botton left and come up between the 8 and 7 for the shot on the 3. From there, it's a pretty simple run out pattern.

Of course, I only know how to roll balls up and down the table, so I might not know what I'm talking about.

Its kind of hard to replicate some shots on this WEI table, but the shot you are describing really wasnt there. even though it might look like it was from seeing the diagram. plus with the position of the 2-Ball near the pocket it would have been tough to dig in and get the low left to take ahold. again, my diagram might not be the 100% perfect diagram to nit-pick, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Was the half a tip below center shot there to go back and forth and end up just above the 7? I ask that because center ball is easier and getting around the 5 is key. Any makable shot on the 3 can get you on the 4 from what I see. 4 going in the side or same hole as the 2.

The next challenge is from the 5 to the 6. Only because I never like going from close to the long rail to close to the short rail, but you could get there from many places since the 5 isn't on the rail.

Its so funny, things were totally different tonight. last night i struggled to even get a shot, got frustrated, ran one rack and messed up a couple of others.

tonight, it was like firing on all cylinders. ran three racks and made some good shots. i did mess up 2-3 others, but they were kind of squirrely racks, if you know what i mean. but, hey, with this new attitude of mine i'll take the good with the bad.

maybe i should watch the old Beavis & Butthead show. they used to have a PAT (Positive Action Team) on the show..

perhaps. thats similar to what i was trying to do, more or less. and now that i think about it, with this new/slick cloth, i think the ball just sort of died coming off the rail also. this may have played into the scratch as well.

and last night was again just the opposite of thursday night. ran one rack, messed up 2-3 others, but just simply struggled to do anything right. missed shots, missed position, fooled on where the CB was going to go, etc. was a real frustrating evening.

i think whats perhaps playing into my inconsistency, at least for now, is a sore back. its not easy to play pool when it hurts to bend over the table.

Adding to the dilemma here.......

broke some racks before supper tonight and the balls cooperated some. but, the wand wasnt in the hands of a magician early on as i hosed up some. i ran out once, but for the most part, had 4-5 others i felt i could have gotten out.

so i break for supper and had a small cigar as i watched the Archer/San Souci BCA 9-Ball match from 1999. then after supper and the cigar i returned to the table. and when i returned things just turned around. the balls cooperated, i ran a few racks, got things going, got some confidence, and was totally ticked because i hosed up those handful earlier on.

same old story, need that consistency.

Consistency is not your #1 enemy, it's but one of many clues (symptoms) that are showing up.

Your mind is your #1 enemy.

Wow, SixPack! I love everthing you said here. I think I need to frame this comment and hang it on the wall in my billiards room. Thanks for the insight.

Hi there,

at the moment you definitley understand that your brain is just *working with pictures* you ll also understand the one and only important thing for having consitancy: your subconcious mind- - often not known- or just put by side by many players.
Good instructors will also tell you about these things (how brain/eye etc is working), and not just showing funny shots, patterns and how to use english!
You probably will learn for a lifetime in billiards- but the key was and will be always to start with good fundamentals and understanding what is important.
Listen and learn to qualifed instructors-and you ll profite for a lifetime from it,

lg,
