I know I may receive a lot of responses with links to previous threads if this has been previously discussed...but for those of you that are slightly familiar with my posts, you know I lack the discipline to search before posting...so sorreeeeee!
Here goes (and this is a loaded question):
If I wanted to run, or help coordinate a 1P tournament (2 days - $100 - $150 entry, calcutta, double-elim), what are the recipes for success?
With the economy being what it is, or with people's perception of the economy being what it is, it appears no room is willing or able to add money unless they get some return on their investment; not that anyone can fault them for this. So, that being said, what are some of the key factors one should observe / obey when considering running a tournament?
I would think the following would apply:
Proper advertising (flyers, word-of-mouth, Internet)
Schedule (try to not conflict with other more popular regional tourneys)
Venue (quality of equipment, food, drink, smoking or non)
Incentives for players {payout sizes, payout ratios, calcutta, merchandising (maybe having a cue repairman on site for that weekend, t-shirts, other paraphernalia, etc.)}
Well-established rules of play
Competent tournament director
Shot-Clock or match clock
Incentives for room owner: ROI, ROI..period
It appears that wooing the room owner to have a weekend tourney is the first major hurdle.
Getting the added money is the next.
Then getting the players to show up.
I know the above-mentioned categories can be broken down in a more granular fashion but was hoping for input from many of you that have experience doing this. I know there are a lot of room owners, past and present, as well as TDs and action-men, league operators and pool champs out there that will have opinions of what should happen for a tourney like this, and what they would like to see.
