I was working on a few things today, including pace and what not to do while running balls. I caught a gear and put up a 73...55....61! the whole time I was only thinking of what not to do.....here's the list...

Don't go into the back of the stack without a good insurance ball.

Play position on at least 2 balls at a time.

Open the balls up EARLY!....

Do you all keep a list of what NOT to do, or what TO do while running balls?
thats it!

I'm going back to see if I can put up a number.....seeya!

Help Meeee!!!!!!!

I just started playing straight pool and don't know what to do in some situations. First, what should you do if you get bad shape on your breakout ball? Should you make it and then play safe or use it to play safe? Second, what would you do here? This is not exactly what it was, but the cue was stuffed in the back of the stack with only the front broken open.

CueTable Help

I got creative with one of my "bad shape on the break ball" and did this to my opponent. We are both new at the game, he thought one was dead, I ended up with all of them... :)

I'd most likely take a scratch or 2 to maybe get my oponent off guard in the scratch sequence....then if all else fails, leave em on the end rail tough as can be...

Nice runs Gerry! I like the way you think about 'stuff' as you go through the rack! Good points to remember!

I like your list Gerry. I would only add to clear an area of all balls when a cluster needs to be broken in that direction. This keeps mini clusters from forming.

Also I like to keep one insurance ball on the short rail at all times til all the clusters are broken up. Since most balls are pocketed in those corner pockets it serves me pretty well when I get myself in trouble.

My main problem is the break shot after clearing the table. I practice it, but no consistancy yet.

Good thoughts renard....one of my problems used to be breaking clusters and pushing them into other clusters. Not doing that used to be one of my main thoughts while running balls.

I really like the idea of the ball on the short rail for insurance. after I open up the stack and most balls have pockets or lanes, I go for the balls on the rails right away. I picked that up watching the Sigel 150 run from the 1992 us open.

Another thought I've been keeping is not smash into clusters, but to hit them with a definite purpose and idea of where they will end up. also not smashing them helps keep tight position in relation to the cue ball.

thanks, Gerry
