Running Out, the movie -- anyone see it?

Inspired by the recent thread about Poolhall Prophets, AKA, Shooting Gallery, which I thought really sucked (the movie, not the thread), I was wondering...

What's the deal with that pool movie, Running Out? I keep checking the internet periodically, but it never seems to become available.

The review on IMDB actually makes it sound good, at least potentially better than most of the the other pool flicks I've seen. :o

Does anyone here have any info on it, or did anyone here see it by any chance?

I liked shooting gallery, but if you want a laught check out the movie "behind the 8"

Thanks for the recommendation. Now that's two pool movies I can't find. LOL. I did see "Behind the Eight" on IMDB, but couldn't find it on Amazon, Netflix or Blockbuster online.

The cover image is here on this Chinese website:

I'll get my room mate to read the site tomorrow and see if the video is available for sale here. If it is, I might buy a few copies to sell.

Wow, that's cool! Thanks, Colin. Interesting, that site looks like a Chinese version of IMDB. They even have almost the same rating score (7.6 vs. 7.8), and the Chinese one has one less vote (73 vs. 74).

Cool to see the cover image! If you're roommate comes up with anything, please let us know. :)

Cuebacca,
Unfortunately that Chinese website lead ran dry. No videos available for download or purchase.

Seems they have just copied the IMDb data, and somehow picked up a cover image as well.

I found a couple of reviews which praised the movie highly. It seems it was only released at a couple of film festivals....a very small $50k budget film.

Hope a copy turns up someday so we can see it.

Cheers,
Colin

Hey Colin,

Thanks for trying. Glad to see that you are interested in it as well. According to IMDb, it won the Riverside Film Festival in 2001. I managed to find an email address of said festival, so I'll post back again if the trail leads anywhere. :)

I thought I'd post the reviews from IMDb, in case anyone didn't feel like clicking around over there...

Get a couple people together who want to make a film, some who may never have acted before, first time feature screenwriter, first time feature director and you would usually have a recipe for disaster. Not here.

This very dark look at the world of professional pool hustling will captivate you. I grabs you by the throat and just won't let go. Despite some flaws Cepek does a worthy job directing but the real story here is the story. It just won't let you go.

A couple of emerging future powerhouses are hidden in this independent gem. Kaddy who plays Cindy is destined for Hollywood stardom. Vanessa Davis who plays Tanya, a strung out addict that makes money as a dominatrix, and Niemi who plays Rex, a sexually addicted pool hustler, have a scene that rewrites the book on intense. Niemi who also penned the incredible script also shows serious chops as a writer.

This film is as dark as it is captivating and may be too much for many people. Don't look for this film to be at your local theater anytime soon. Most likely will get an Art House run before going to video. Too bad because this film delivers. Incredible bang for the buck with a message and social conscience.

Gritty drama about three hustler, gambler, pool player types who duke it out in real life circumstances and the penalties (known or unknown) that they incur from their behavior. I have to admit the ending is difficult to watch. Many people at the festival I saw this film at broke down and cried and had to leave before the last couple minutes of the film rolled through. Lots of manly men with tears in their eyes that night. An incredible film whether you're into the gambling thing or not. An incredible story.

A very moving film. Tight, vibrant and energetic., 13 December 2001

Well written film that was slightly hampered by cookie cutter direction and middle of the road acting. Still, this small film rocks and it'll move you. You better watch this film with someone that you care about and who cares about you. You'll need someone to hang on to as the ending is hard to watch. Brilliantly moving story. 8 out of 10.

Based on those reviews I'm very interested to see how they developed pool into the plot.

I wonder if it will still resonate with a pool player. Sometimes if the actors have poor form or the game strategy is ridiculous, then it can just ruin the credibility of the story.

That's one thing that made the Hustler a classic. It was pretty much believable.

tony watson

in the credits it shows a tony waston as fat tony. Is that the same Tony Watson that people post about on here.

Bump

I thought I'd bump this for anyone who hadn't seen this thread. Anyone seen this movie? It's been another year and a half and I still can't find it on the web. LOL. That film festival never got back to me either. :(
