Sad State of Pool

Here in Georgia / games on bar boxes are a $1.00 . I wish it would go up to 5 dollars. Then when you look at the unvacume tables / dirty balls/ bad cloth.... and so on....you say to yourself how do these people stay open? Then it comes to you.... the legues..... APA / BCA ... Valley.... I'm down to one game a week now.... it' s a local tournament ..... was going up to 150 miles to watch and play in some torunaments. Just because the local bars had taken away from pool. They are only concern how many quarters will fit in the slot. Oh well.... I wish eveyone well in their aventure.

What the hell is Anchor Steam beer? I've never heard of it - is it worth looking for??

It's REALLY a great beer. Many years ago I got turned onto it when the Washington Post ran an article on beer across the nation. At the time, they had it rated as a 5 star beer when compared to all the others. It's a slightly darker beer, but definitely worth it. You'll pay a premium for it.

Some Pool Players just aren't classy people.

Having spent several years of my life as a Golf Professional (assistant Pro at Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth Texas) I can truly say that gambling is also a way of life in that sport too, but somehow doesn't come off as a dirty.
But remember this, there's a big difference between a dingy smoke filled room & a beautifully landscaped park. And most times an absolutely magnificent 19th HOLE is the scene of high dollar gaming. People don't mind paying Big Bucks to watch the Golf Players ... by the way, some of them sleep in their cars, just about all of them have a foul mouth (they get that from the rich), some of them are dopers, some cheat on their wives, some are theives & some are worth killing, but they are still revered... it's a phony image, gilded by a thin layer of gold.

Golf was a game for the rich, just a Billiards used to be. Every Golf Course on the planet has your hustlers, just like the Pool Rooms, but again the scenery is better. If you will think about it... look at the hoards of people that flock to casinos around the planet to "try their luck". People also think that if the rich are doing it, it must be good. People enjoy rubbing shoulders with the rich, there's always a chance of something rubbing off.

I'd like to see some statistics on the number of individuals playing golf and pool at various income levels. Although I know a few guys here and there that earn $100k and over that play pool, I'd have to guess that there are a lot more players in low income brackets that are the vast majority in pool. If a guy spends $40+ a week in table time, he's a cherished customer. Hell, $40 won't even pay cart and green fees at most courses. Even at Colonial CC, I'm sure that it had it's share of assholes for members as all private clubs do, but at least they all had big bucks and high paying careers. At the lower end public courses in low income areas, you still have the weekend warrior that brings his own cooler filled with beer, but more and more courses disallow it. For the most part, pool players are cheap...probably the cheapest participating sports fan out there. I have to think that it's also because they just don't have the spendable income. When they do gamble, many times it isn't just for the excitement of gambling and seeing who can best their opponent and have bragging rights, it's to supplement their income or possibly to provide their income since nothing else is coming in.

THE IMAGE AROUND OUR SPORT, STINKS,
After many years of doing my best to help our image, I still try. Pool-players, there are good ones and bad ones. [not ability, just image].One rotten apple!

The points that Troy has made are true. I have been on both sides of the fence.

Satman, I had a friend who owned 2 rooms, and he wouldn't let the guy bring in food and or drinks, and the leader of the so called pack, said, if you don't, we will go to another room. He said bye bye, and 3 month's later he closed both rooms and lost about 1/2 million dollars, along with his family..
Yep, because of one pool player who didn't believe in paying his own way........

I go to a tournament and buy a booth for displaying cues and doing cue-repair. I also donate a cue at "EVERY" one I attend.

One that I attended last year, the room-owner [promotor] told me I could not set up, but we will accept your cue. I was told that they didn't have room for me to set up.[there was room].I went ahead and honored my word and gave the cue anyway.
They took my cue, rasied the [retail],price from, $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 and made the remark, that this should make us extra money.
They were already being sponsered in whole by another group.[ sponsered in full with plenty to spare].........

Then was told not to sell any cues out of my trunk. [I don't sell cues as some carpet-baggers do, out of my trunk]. When ask about cues, we went to my motel room, and did my business there. Never told anyone to go to my room, they ask me about my cues.

This shows that they too[room-owners] are greedy sometimes.

The first event I was helping to promote was 20 some odd years ago in Tampa. Me and Grady help the "world all around championships". Price tag to get in was only $3.00 bucks. Had people complaining that it was high-way robery. Sneaking in, getting caught and then want to fight over 3 bucks.
We lost over 20 thousand bucks. We paid off, without a hitch.
No one complained then. However if we would of not been able to pay off, world war 3 would of been on.....

If our IMAGE can change, maybe, just maybe, we will get noticed..
Thanks to all who try to mprove pool's "IMAGE".

I played in that Tampa tournament and you drew no spectators, who's fault is that, the players? Are you implying we should have not taken our prize money we had coming? When you put on a tournament you take a risk. The $3.00 I don't think kept people out. If I remember you had maybe one beef with T.R. or somebody, but that had nothing to do overall with the thing being a bust. Tournaments are risky. I put on one and had people from Century Village (A local retirement place that has a 10 table pool room), coming on buses to watch. I even bought ad's in local high school news papers. It was almost sold out every session. It was all pre arranged. A week later I went to a tournament and they had like 20 spectators a session and I heard someone saying how lucky I got with my tournament. No luck to it, I went out and got the spectators. I know what you are saying though, pool players can be rough. The same guy that will put a match to his money at the track, will try to stiff you for table time with a pocket full of money.

BREWSKI's

Dixie Blackened VooDoo Lagar is kick ass dark beer. There are many great beers in the world today. You just can't beat the beers from Europe. You got Monks that haven't done anything but make beer, bread, and cheese for 1500 years. These guys don't even talk for life. DuVal, #1 in the world. I know, I am an expert. I have personally drank more than 1 million beers. (OK, close to 1 million). I don't have six pack abbs, I got keg abbs.

It's easy to blame the players for the state of pool. In fact, most who aren't players do just that. If it were that simple, pool would have been "fixed" a long time ago.

This is as good as it gets for pocket billiards[/B]...[/B]Some really great tournaments like DCC, US OPEN, World Championships, Mosconi Cup etc, and some nice local and regional tours like Joss NE tour, Viking tour, SE tour, Florida Tours etc.. Having RJR dump the Camel tour pretty much sealed the fate of any large scale professional (mens) tour for a long time to come and I doubt that time will ever come.
Whats my point you maybe thinking....My point is this: enjoy what is here and now and stop bitching about how this or that tournament or tour should be run it is not going to happen the way we would like it. It all revolves around money and there is too many people on the take. Enjoy playing pool for what it is.....a game!

I don't think the image of the game is a problem. There are alot of other games and sports that have bad images. Look at bowling. You have obese, beer-drinking homer simpsons. Yet there is more money to be made in bowling than in pool.

The problem with pool is there are too many nits. There are too many nits who can't play worth a shit, but are ever so willing to open their mouths and talk shit when someone with ideas like Grady comes around. At least Grady is trying to help the game. What the hell are you shit talkers trying to do? Feel good because you talked a bunch of crap sitting safely behind your computers? I couldn't believe how many idiots opened their mouths on the jump-cue ban by Tony Annigoni. People who were admittedly APA 4's and 40 speeds or even lower were ranting about this and that. Hell, if you can't run 2 balls why the hell does it matter if you can use a jump cue or not? All you're doing is hurting pool when you open your mouth and argue about things that barely concern you. Aside from that, I think there are alot of greedy bastards who are in charge of major pool organizations.
