Sailor Cue & Burton Spain

Hi Dennis:

I haven't been playing pool all summer and have done very little cue work over the summer.......nice weather, kayaking season you know. I'm starting to play a little again and I've completed a couple cues recently. I learn something everytime and I'm getting to the point where I can build a pretty decent simple cue. I'm not ready to tackle points or any inlay type work yet, I don't have the equipment or skills for that yet; I'll build more simple cues for practice.

I never did the basement remodeling or put in a table yet. Maybe next fall. I'll try to get to some tournaments this year. Hopefully we'll get to play some this winter. Hope all is well with you and your 14.1 game. Take care.

Early 1970's Sailor cue with veneer blank.

Here are pictures of my one of my Dad's Sailor cues from the early 1970's. This is the only Sailor I have ever seen with veneer points. The cue has 4 points with 4 veneers per point: black, green, and 2 maple strips. The main point looks like either bocote or possibly even walnut because it is kind of grainy. The points don't quite match in height, I don't know if the blank was like this or whether they ran out during the turn down. Any ideas where the blank came from?

3 old sailor cues.

As long as I had the camera I took pictures of all 3 of my Dad's Sailor cues. These cues are all from the early 1970's when Sailor still had his pool hall on Washington Ave. Enjoy.

Easy answer here-

Sailor CAN'T cut points. I've seen his shop, and there's no milling equipment to be found. If your cue has points and was built by Frank, then it is more likely than not one of Spain's forearms. If I recall correctly, these are somewhat rare, and more desireable. IF you are interested in selling, I know several people in the Chicago area that collect Sailor cues.
have you been in the basement?

very cool Sailors, zagi (!?)

Sailor probably will remember where the blanks came from. I spoke to him last week about the Burton Spain, Joel Hercek blanks and the Kringles.

p.s. your cue looks pretty good.

It seems to me that some young cuemaker just starting out whose father knows Sailor from way back could do worse than try to pick his brain for a while re cue making.
