Yeah, that's what I had previously, the only thing I didn't like about it (besides the fact that I lost it) is that the abrasives in the shaper part get clogged with bits of leather and chalk, and lose their effectiveness over time. Apparently this doesn't happen with the Sandman, which is appealing to me. Anyway, I'll probably just order another UTT and some replacement abrasives. It's cheaper than a Sandman anyway.

The sandman doesn't clog at all!

Besides how many UTT and abrasive pads would you wind up buying before you spent the same amount as the Sandman?

I bet over a lifetime you would spend more than $20. :D

Looks to me like the UTT is about $14 and the abrasives are about $1.50..........so that would mean 4 abrasives and the UTT would put you at about....................$20.

I think the Sandman is the better deal, but everyone has their own preferences. LOL

utt= 14.00
abrasives 1.50 x 3 = 4.50

grand total= 18.50
 
For $3 even a chimp could shape a dime radius w/the metal shapers from Seyberts

Some of my best friends are chimps, and I don't think they'd be very happy with your insinuation that they are inferior beings. ; )

Yep, and sandpaper doesn't have a lifetime warranty. So in the end you would spend more than the sandman by replacing the sand paper.

Also the sandman does this job much quicker than sand paper, IMO.

Hi Andrew;

I have all of these shapers. I use the sandman for bringing a new tip down to size and shape. Its hard to beat. But to get that perfect shape that your talking about requires you do it by eye. That is because it has very little curvature.

The best tool for that perfect shape is the shaper made by John Rea at Wolfbite. It works great and is curved perfect for a dime radius, and will last for a long time if used by hand. I screwed one up on my lathe.

Follow his directions on how to use it. Email him as he is frequently out of stock, he's a good guy and responsive. Dan Trogdan also makes a very similar one. After a few shapings, just rinse with a little water and maybe brush with an old toothbrush and its like new. Cuts finer and leaves a perfect finish on the tip, while the sandman leaves a little too rough finish on the tip for me, sort of schredded.

Who needs a shaper?:rolleyes: Just take it outside and rough it up on the sidewalk.:eek: :D :D
 
I bought a willards when i was 12....thats 21 years ago. Swore by it till i used a sandman a buddy had. Sold my willards the next day for what i originally paid for it and got a sand man.

didnt pay 20 bucks for mine though....i think was 14.00

they dont have alot of curve on them but you can bend them abit if yoou want.
